Did you ever wonder why some of the citizens of Libya still support Gaddafi?

Anyone clear on what exactly the "rebels" offer? Or who the "rebels" are?

It's clear that we are there stickily because we have a business interest. War is a business, a BIG business and nothing else.....wasn't Obama suppose to bring our troops HOME?

I am no longer clear on anything Obama was supposed to stand for. It certainly wasn't peace or: to establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

I agree 100% however it IS clear why we are in Libya. What's sad is no matter who gets voted in after him, democrat, rep. no matter who.....it's the same b.s new admin. That's just how it is. Our gov is run by lobbyists and the big corporations. The only way we'll see any real change is if we get someone like Ventura in which will never happen because of his atheist views.

I don't think the US has a substantial financial interest in Libya -- we only began lifting our sanctions in 2007. However, several of our European friends (and NATO members) DO have substantial interest and import Libyan oil which could explain their greater, shall we say, sense of urgency. Since the intelligence agencies of most of those same countries have questioned the identity of the rebel "leaders", some saying that they (the rebels) are likely backed, at least to some extent, by al Qaeda or other extremist organizations, it remains unclear why we're there. Unless it's the thinking that we'll make new friends in the other Arab countries, or that whoever replaces Gaddafi will be more US-friendly than he. Historically speaking, neither is likely.

Per gardener’s original post, Libyans are provided with all sorts of state provided benefits such as free health care and education, subsidized housing... much the same things some believe the US should provide its citizens. One may only surmise, indeed, what the rebels are really offering other than the now popular, even faddish, activity of rebelling.

While Gaddafi (officially) holds no government office or title, he does appear to be in control of the business of running the country of Libya and does, apparently, represent what seems to be the legitimate governing faction. One can only wonder what our own government's course of action would be if, within the US, the peoples of one or several states decided to overthrow, or declare themselves independent of, the current form of federal government. Oh, wait... that's been tried.
