seriously the earth needs this day, and its April 22 2011. Though the earth need much more then a day, its a start. If everybody at least does something, anything. thats more then nothing. though most people do nothing, on one day, one day of the year, that people choose to do something. it makes the difference.

These are just some of the problems we are causing.

    * Anoxic waters — Anoxic event • Hypoxia • Ocean deoxygenation • Dead zone

    * Climate change — Global warming • Global dimming • Fossil fuels • Sea level rise • Greenhouse gas • Ocean acidification • Shutdown of thermohaline circulation

    * Conservation — Species extinction • Pollinator decline • Coral bleaching • Holocene extinction • Invasive species • Poaching • Endangered species

    * Energy — Energy conservation • Renewable energy • Efficient energy use • Renewable energy commercialization

    * Environmental degradation — Eutrophication • Habitat destruction • Invasive species

    * Environmental health — Air quality • Asthma • Electromagnetic fields • Electromagnetic radiation and health • Indoor air quality • Lead poisoning • Sick Building Syndrome

    * Genetic engineering — Genetic pollution • Genetically modified food controversies

    * Intensive farming — Overgrazing • Irrigation • Monoculture • Environmental effects of meat production • Slash and burn • Pesticide drift • Plasticulture

    * Land degradation — Land pollution • Desertification

Soil — Soil conservation • Soil erosion • Soil contamination • Soil salination

    * Land use — Urban sprawl • Habitat fragmentation • Habitat destruction

    * Nanotechnology — Nanotoxicology • Nanopollution

    * Nuclear issues — Nuclear fallout • Nuclear meltdown • Nuclear power • Nuclear weapons • Nuclear and radiation accidents • Nuclear safety • High-level radioactive waste management.

    * Overpopulation — Burial • Water crisis • Overpopulation in companion animals • Tragedy of the commons

    * Ozone depletion — CFC

    * Pollution — Light pollution • Noise pollution • Visual pollution • Nonpoint source pollution • Point source pollution

Water pollution — Acid rain • Eutrophication • Marine pollution • Ocean dumping • Oil spills • Thermal pollution • Urban runoff • Water crisis • Marine debris • Microplastics • Ocean acidification • Ship pollution • Wastewater • Fish kill • Algal bloom • Mercury in fish
Air pollution — Smog • Tropospheric ozone • Indoor air quality • Volatile organic compound • Particulate matter • Sulphur oxide

    * Reservoirs — Environmental impacts of reservoirs

    * Resource depletion — Exploitation of natural resources • Overdrafting

    Consumerism — Consumer capitalism • Planned obsolescence • Over-consumption
Fishing — Blast fishing • Bottom trawling • Cyanide fishing • Ghost nets • Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing • Overfishing • Shark finning • Whaling
Logging — Clearcutting • Deforestation • Illegal logging
Mining — Acid mine drainage • Mountaintop removal mining • Slurry impoundments

    * Toxins — Chlorofluorocarbons • DDT • Endocrine disruptors • Dioxin • Toxic heavy metals • Herbicides • Pesticides • Toxic waste • PCB • Bioaccumulation • Biomagnification

    * Waste — E-waste • Litter • Waste disposal incidents • Marine debris • Medical waste • Landfill • Leachate • Recycling • Incineration • Great Pacific Garbage Patch

thats a pretty gnarly list of just some of the issues that we are causing on earth, there is alot of small things we can do everyday to help make life on earth just a little bit cleaner and friendlier for everyone.

so what is some of your ideas of ways you can help the earth tomorrow?

Plant something! Plants are the backbone of all life on Earth: they regulate our climate, purify our water, help create rich soils and protect those soils from erosion.

Plants, in their amazing diversity, are also an essential resource for human survival and well-being: they provide food, medicine, shelter, and clothing, and are a source of unending beauty. Can you imagine what the world would be with without plants?

Planting something is an excellent way to give back to your earth!

Fresh water is a renewable and changeable, but limited natural resource. Fresh water can only be renewed through the process of the water cycle, where water from seas, lakes, rivers, and dams evaporates, forms clouds, and returns to water sources as precipitation.

A typical household of four uses 260 gallons of water each day. Much of this water is used in the bathroom. Toilets use 40% of the total, showers/baths and faucets use 35%. By contrast, 15% is used in the kitchen, and 10% for washing clothes.

if its brown flush it down if its yellow let it mellow.

Attractively done, and very informative. Earth Day is the last day of Earth Week, and coincides with Easter Week this year.

last year on earth day i planted a tea tree in china. i didn't actually do it, but through adagio.com i "did"

i also pee in the shower most days (we had a thread about this right joker)

and ride my bike everyday, instead of drive my car everywhere.

nice post, floes, though i didn't read ALL the problems.

    thats a good point.

marijuana is probably not even half as big as the one from cigs, all the cig buds people throw on the ground, 1-4 packs a day depending on the smoker. i mean, a joint can get 2, 3 people high for a few hours. but some people can smoke 2-6 cigs in an hour like its nothing. some more, some less, just depending on the person.

    How Smoking Causes Air Pollution?

    (smoking environment pollution)
It is quite evident that smoking causes air pollution and to some extent also pollutes the ground. Approximately 4000 chemicals are present in cigarettes, which are breathed out and released in the atmosphere. Out of the total North American population 30% of them are smokers and the percentage of the smoking population in developing countries is much higher. This indicates that an enormous quantity of pollution is being released in the atmosphere every day.

How Smoking Causes Land and Water Pollution? (smoking environment damage)

Pollution caused due to smoking is not confined only to the air or body but to some extent it is also responsible in polluting the land and the water. Every day millions of cigarette butts are left on the ground. Maximum of the cigarette butts finally end up in lakes and rivers. By mistake fishes and other water animals eat these butts resulting in death of these water bodies. The remaining butts left on the ground will approximately take 25-26 years to decompose. The various additives and chemicals are leached into the soil, polluting the soil as well as plants. During dry seasons cigarette butts can even cause major fire, which is even harmful for the environment.

How Cigarette Production Affects Environment? (effects of smoking environment)
Effects of smoking environment: Major impact on the environment is due the production of the cigarettes. The land, which is used for the cultivation of tobacco plants, could be better used for producing food for the third world countries. Moreover as the tobacco plant is highly susceptible to pests and disease so to maintain their proper growth and health various chemicals and pesticides are being sprayed. For the production and packaging of the cigarette requires a lot of trees.
    Cigarette Production and Environment
In an hour cigarette-manufacturing unit requires almost 4 miles of paper for rolling and packaging of the cigarettes. Just to produce 300 cigarettes one tree is being wasted. Energy and water is also being wasted for the production of the cigarettes as well as the chemical wastes from the manufacturing unit is also dumped into the soil. Hence it is clear the cigarettes are in total adding huge strain on the body and environment.

With the use of more advance technology tobacco industry can help in decreasing the strain from the environment. But just to save billions of dollar profit/year the industry is not willing to go for the advanced technology. The best and the easiest way to control this environmental destruction, is to stop buying this harmful product. It is tough to quit smoking but directly (your health) and indirectly (environment) it will be beneficial for you only.

    compaired to marijuana:

Grow a plant, chop it down, trim it up, let it dry, roll it up, smoke it down.

    way less worse then cigs.

    save yourself, save the earth
    stop smoking cigs

I posted this somewhere else, figured it fit here too.

Earth Day as a celebration has only been around since the 70's, before that, the average person didn't take a second to think about the environment or what we were doing to our planet.

Now, people in over 175 countries actively participate in Earth Day each year.

Does it solve all the problems and make them go away? Of course not...

Does it stop those that do actively care from celebrating the earth everyday? Of course not...

What it does do, is increase the general awareness of it as an issue.

Increasing people's awareness should never be a negative thing to be looked down upon.

The natives had a reverance for the natural world. They had a strong belief that human beings were obligated to perserve and protect the natural world.

What a wonderful world it would be. The colonist should have learned from the natives and lived their way. Imagine that...everyone working together to respect each others cultures and learning from each other.

Mother is crying now and what can we do to fix her?

As a wise man once wrote:
"…see the whole thing is a world full of rucksack wanderers,
Dharma Bums refusing to subscribe to the general demand
that they consume production and therefore have to work for
the privilege of consuming, all that crap they didn't really want
anyway such as refrigerators, TV sets, cars,…and general junk
you finally always see a week later in the garbage anyway, all
of them imprisoned in a system of work, produce, consume,
work, produce, consume, I see a vision of a great rucksack
revolution thousands or even millions of young Americans
wandering around with rucksacks, going up to mountains to
pray, making children laugh and old men glad, making young
girls happy and old girls happier, all of 'em Zen Lunatics who
go about writing poems that happen to appear in their heads for
no reason and also by being kind and also by strange unexpected
acts keep giving visions of eternal freedom to everybody and to
    all living creatures. "

    whatchu tryin' to say??

oh wait..i think i get it. car dealerships and billboards have their lights on all the time.

i don't think indoor cannabis growing is the worst or even close to being one of the worst forms of carbon footprint by electricity usage.
