Hi, I'm new to forum but not new to opiates, long story short, car accident, pain, going on 8 years now with a script from doc for vic es's.

Anyhow, my issue is I'm tired of risking taking the tylenol in high doses daily for that long. The vic's are 7.5/750. There's some days where ill hit 6000mg's (8 pills) and i know its not good when you start going over 4000.
Talked to doc about it to see if he could give me anything close to what I'm taking without so much tylenol in it and he said both chemicals are poisons and neither one is good for you. Well, I realize that BUT it does help with the pain to get through daily activities.
So he recommended I keep taking what I'm taking but I'm really disturbed about taking that much when I need it, plus with being on it so long its gotta be bad.
Any ideas or opinions on what I can do? Besides find a new doc, blah blah..

Thanks for help and happy I found the site.

Liver problems dont always show themselves until lots of damage is done. Its also psosible u have no damage to your liver. What I would do at this point is get a comprehensive test done, not just the liver function test. Go see another doctor and explain that uve been taking X amount of tylenol, daily for X number of years and you are comcerned that it may be affecting your liver. See how it goes from there. Plus, you said you were taking VIcs, am I right? Why on earth would ur current Dr not put you a step up to Percocet? Has better pain fighting ability plus less tylenol in most cases.

There has been studies that items with Acetomin or whatever doesn't affect the liver SERVERLY BY IT SELF... My chemistry professor claims it does when you combine it with drinking is when the LIVER problems get REALLY SERIOUS .. but by itself, there has not been many problems in recent studies

sounds like you are looking to get bumped up to Oxycontin?...what worked for me was this..''doctor..i have to think about the long term effects of all these pills..i have researched and despite the negative press Oxycontin is still the best long term pain reliever and until something better comes along I think i would like to try it and see if it works for me''....talk to me in a few months and i will tell you how to get bumped from the 20s to the 40s lol...good luck

disclaimer...i only use weed now to control my pain...pills kill

hopefully you can convince your doctor to get you on some better quality meds. are in the mean time, you can try a cold water extraction to separate the hydrocodone from the acetaminophen. also there are certain supplements that you can take to help protect your liver/support overall liver health. good luck!

    @Bottlefed

Yes i currently take generic vicodin es (hydro/apap 7.5/750mg), i get refills every 30 days. Some days are better then others but for the most part ive only gone as far as 8 a day, i know thats not much as im sure most people have taken in a day, but i think thats alot of apap then a liver can handle over the long term.

Like i said im going on 8 years now on it, i dont know why he hasnt changed it to something with less apap in it, i think for the most part is to keep you less inclined to getting addicted.

I see him every 6 months, i have a appt coming up in a couple months, ill talk to him again about it.

As far as the CWE method, i dont know if i quite want to go that route yet, seems involved and slightly dangerous as far as od, maybe just cause ive never done it but ill hold off on that.

    rep.

@ OP: try to either get switched to percocet or a low dose of oxycodone. either one will relieve your pain better with less apap.

rollingalong, i never ever knew that. Im glad you are relatively ok and i hope that you keep on managing with your pain. Surely doctors give you pills for your pain though? Do you just not fill the prescriptions?

And to the OP; ask your doctor for generic oxycodone 10mg. Not percocet because that still has acetametaphin in it. And preferably not the new OP formula oc pills, as i have experienced and heard, for pain relief, they do not work as well as the old ones, and i aint talking just for recreational purposes and i aint talking about shootin or snorting em. Just poppin the new ones just doesnt seem to be the same. best of luck to you

Man, at 6000mg/day for years, i cant believe a DR would perscribe that amount knowing the daily recommendation is no more than 4000mgs. Am I wrong in thinking this is way over the top for what u should be taking?

Just explain to your doctor that you understand the risks involved with certain other medications for pain, but that you are simply and firmly no longer comfortable taking almost 2000mg more daily then the recommended dose of something that can do damage to an organ you only have one of. That would work for my doctor at least.

I would have to take more than 8 vics at once to feel anything from hydrocodone!!! LOL yeah you need to be stepped up to at least oxycodone, that is crazy youve been kept on vics that long, usually they switch you to percs or oxys within a month or so, your doc must be one of them highly against the strong opiates, and will only give vics or tramadol.

wow, thanks for them links for the info. very interesting read. i cant believe it either that he would have me on such a high dose of it for so many years. Even at 4000mg i bet is to much for a liver over that many years like that.

Your doctor should be shot for subjecting you to that much APAP and refusing to switch your meds upon request even though it was perfectly reasonable.

Here's what you do though, find a liquor store and buy some 190 proof Everclear, take a quarter once of weed and mix it with 1 ounce of the liquor, leave it to sit in a container for 2 days shake it as often as you can be bothered to do so, take the weed out with a coffee filter, put 1-5 drops under your tongue a couple times a day. Weed is a great painkillers and will allow you to cut down on your Vics or maybe even stop completely.
