I hate to ask a question that I'm sure has been asked a million times before, but I'm lazy & don't feel like searching...anyway, I was offered a pretty bitching job a few weeks ago. Good salary, 401k match, health insurance, all that crap. Funny thing was there was nothing in the application process that mentioned drug testing. The job I'm going to leave mentioned in the first interview I had w/ them they were a drug free company & perform random drug tests, yet never had a test in the two+ years I worked there. I even did a follow up call w/ the person that hired me for this new job & asked if there was anything I needed to do before I was hired & all she said was there was a bunch of paperwork to fill out, but that's it (could be in that paperwork). So my question is, do employers have to tell you before they hire you they perform tests? I don't think they do, but at the same time I feel for the job I was hired for they would have already made mention about it at some point. I'm not super worried- I stopped smoking a few weeks ago & I'm 5'7'', 130 lbs, & run everyday, along with eating a very healthy diet- but I think I'm just more curious than anything as to whether or not they would/should have already told me about their testing policy. Does anyone have any experience w/ this stuff? Like get hired at a job, only to later find out the drug test?

They would have told you, as they need your consent and signature in order to test you.
At the least they will tell you during the interview that a requirement for getting the position is passing a drug test, and then have you sign the consent form the day you take the test.

I once had a boss ask me in an interview "can you pass a drug test, we test here". I said yes but he kept mentioning it. But they offerd me a job and i was never tested. The regular 5 panel drug test is expensive and I think company's especially smaller ones avoid it when they can. They are hoping you won't be dumb enough to apply if you believe you will be tested. Well I was, I called their bluff and won.
