I expect you've all heard of the forthcoming Alternative vote referendum scheduled for the 5 May 2011, replacing the current First Past the Post system. So I'm wondering which campaign you guys are going to support? Yes/No I personally think it's a bit of a shoddy compromise for a proportional system. Probably one of Clegg's biggest mistakes to date! It's not what any of the minor parties really wanted and if it is passed, the Conservatives can claim it's a resolved issue. Even more importantly, if it isn't passed, Conservatives can just claim "people clearly aren't interested in voting reform".. Lose/lose situation.
JonnyH This politics site is mainly inhabited by North Americans and so has that slant. But I’m a Brit and a long time supporter and campaigner for PR and yes this seems like a shoddy compromise to me it’s a fuck up and I’m jumping with rage about it. I mean the fact is that the Libs had this one chance and they blew it first by going for this compromise and second by becoming the Conservatives lapdog and turning into hate figures to so many so the argument turns from ‘good this will stop the domination of the big parties’ to ‘shit if this is coalition government I’m fucking against it’ But still I’m voting for because as the old saying goes - every journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step -
TBH if Tricky Nicky is so set on AV then I will vote no just to give him a slap. If the Fib-Dems begin to believe that Clegg is that unpopular that voters will scotch anything that he believes in then they may dump him. :smash: Hey ho.
The last post was exactly what I was warning about Rather than looking at the issue, which is trying to drag, kicking and screaming, the British political system into the 20t century (and yes I do mean the 20th century I think we have a long way to go to get it into the 21st) what we get instead is people just wanting to give Nick Clegg a ‘good kicking’.
I hear what you say. Poking cleggy with a pointy stick is just a sideshow, it neither helps nor hinders the updating of politics in this country. In some ways the present government drags us back into the 19th century where you had to know your place. The poor, me included, are having their rights seriously curtailed whilst the "nobs" are reasserting their dominance over the country and its inhabitants. Education, benefits, work opportunities etc are being restricted for the rapidly growing 21st century underclass. Sometimes rampaging through the big cities is the only way to be heard. I wish it were not so.
The only thing I will ever vote on is the legalisation of cannabis. Until we get a referendum on that all politicians can go and fuck themselves.
Well that IS a reasonable standpoint. I want to hang politicians from lamposts so all of a sudden you ain't so far off being mainstream. You are part of the future be proud of yourself.
I think it's certain that Clegg will have to go if the Fib Dems are going to stand a chance at having successful referendums. I reckon it would be great to see him go ASAP and promote the referendum through a different leader. Cameron might even encourage him to stay at an attempt to sabotage the referendum. I agree completely and it's a real shame. This coalition's going to put everyone off any voting systems which could encourage an unstable majority. Not to mention Clegg n his cronies have successfully destroyed the Lib Dems reputation.
