So I've decided to go the cloth diapering route. There are so many reasons to go for it: ecologically friendly, no plastics/chemicals next to baby's skin, cute, etc.
I was wondering if other mamas or papas are doing it around here. What kinds are you using? What have you used? Tips and tricks? More reasons to cloth diaper?

I live in a very ecofriendly home. Off the grid solar powered with woodstoves, etc. So wonderful living where I do. I work with 2 other mamas who have inspired me to cloth diaper. My mother had 6 kids and had us all in cloth diapers using just the flatfolds and plastic liners!

After so much research, I had no idea that cloth diapering was so diverse! There are so many options to choose from. I am lucky to have other moms set me up with a few starter diapers. I think I will mostly go with the prefolds and make up some wool longgies and pullup style diapers from old wool sweaters. I also have some bumgeniuses and fuzzibunnz on the registry.

Any feedback would bee appreciated. There are many diaperboards, but i love the hipforums and the people in it so I'd like different views.

    Peace n love:daisy:

I've never used cloth diapers... Do you throw it away or wash it? I'm absolutely terrible with laundry. =X

    You go girl!

My son will soon be 27, but I still remember those young years, and I am quite sure I would have Lost My Mind if I had not had pampers or some such. :) Good Luck!

I never put disposable diapers on my babies. They are 100% cloth diapered. I use all pocket style diapers. Fuzzibunz are my absolute favorites because they are just great quality that actually last and fit perfectly. I am not a fan of Bumgenius diapers at all. I have had many of them, and they are just a fancy disposable IMO. The longest I have had one last is 11 months, then it is garbage because the velcro stops sticking to the laundry tabs and the elastic is shot. I vowed to never spend another cent on Bumgenius diapers. Most of my stash are Happy Heinys One Size diapers. I started using these on my daughter when she was a couple of weeks old and I loved that I could also use them on my older daughter who was 2-1/2 at the time. These diapers are a year and a half old and still look and work like new. I use all microfiber inserts in my diapers. I used to use hemp but I didn't find them as absorbant and they fell apart after awhile. At night, I use a huge Thirsties insert along with a doubler.

I have never used prefolds with covers, but that was also how my mom cloth diapered me. I just started knitting so I'm planning on making some wool soakers soon and buying some fitted diapers.

I've cloth diapered for many many years and 2 girls now, so please let me know if you have any questions. I wouldn't do it any other way.

I have been making my own from cotton flannel bedsheets I got at the thrift store. I have a bunch of flatfolds made as well as some pocket diapers. Cloth wipes, too.

I used these websites for info, the Rita's Rump Pockets pattern is free, and I liked the way it is one-size. :D

I bought a few covers, I wouldn't dare try wool on my baby because I am very allergic to it myself.

I am also making a few fleece covers, does anyone have experience with them?

For baby wipes, I use old flannel baby blankets. I had a ton of them given to me throughout the years, but you can usually find them for cents at thrift shops. I sew terry cloth or old baby towels to the flip side. I just use water instead of any solution. I grab a handful of wipes in the morning, wet them all, and store them in an old huggies wipes box to use all day.

I use prefolds with wool covers. I was nervous about my girlie being allergic too, but she seems to do well with them. Plus, they keep her nice and warm-especially the longies.

I have a few mama-made all-in-ones, but I save those for grandma to use since she is terrified of prefolds for some reason-even though she used them on her kids!

my 3 grand kids wore cloth diapers that my daughter made by hand...she used the 2 piece type..that way he inner piece takes the brunt of the job , so to speak...then she would wash the inners seperately from the outers.....seemed to work good

  12. My children wore cloth ones which I used to soak overnight, making them slightly less difficult to wash. It was always the square ones that had to be folded to fit. I used to love to watch peeps trying to get to grips with them. You know the classic, baby looks fine lying down but the minute he/she is picked up the diaper does a quick exit by way of the feet and lands on the floor. Still makes me laugh!

Awesome to see so much cloth diapering mamas here! some of my friends think im nuts, but hey, i got the time and washing machine! started making a few already mostly with wool. hope baby isnt allergic! found this cool pattern. can be altered around if needed. http://www.birdcrossstitch.com/soakers/pattern/

I have a few different kinds of cloth diapers too. what do you use for soap? i heard charlies soap is good. i have a HE washer so i cant use too soapy stuff.

    thanks for the support!

  14. I washed them by hand so any soap powder, not detergent, did the job. I use a liquid soap now in my machine for my delicate fabrics which doesn't lather a great deal but I think that it's only available in France and Spain (jabon de Marseille). Sorry can't be of more help.

Fuzzibunz where good for us. We got ours new, but sold them when we were done....so you don't have to buy them new. Some people thought it was funny that our boy had to wear his sister's bright pink ones, but it didn't bother him or us.

I don't think it's been said here yet but everyone who cloth diapers should know about Kawaii diapers... you can get them on ebay or at http://www.theluvyourbaby.com/

they are pretty much the best kept secret of the cloth diapering world... they're almost exactly like bum geniuses one size but they are a tiny bit bulkier but hold up to wear and tear FANTASTICALLY!

a friend of mine has been using them from birth and her son is now a toddler and still wearing them... she has NEVER had any leaks and she SWEARS by them.

as soon as I save up enough for my stash I'll be ordering a big batch of them... my son's whole diaper stash will be here long before he is! :)
(19w2d with my first, just found out he's a boy!)

I've heard good and bad about Kawaii diapers. I haven't tried them myself, but I may order one just to see if I like it. I swear by Fuzzi bunz and cannot stand Bumgenius diapers. I love FBs so much that I almost hate to risk wasting money on anything else since I know how much I love them.

If i use diapers i use cloth ones. My advice:

    Hemp, hemp, hemp.

They are soft and absorbent and have natural anti bacterial properties.

Wool is great for covers too, instead of synthetic plastic ones.

Also, velcro seems like a great idea, but it's a pain in the wash and eventually doesn't work anymore. Go for snaps if you have the choice.

Cloth diaper dad here. We used 'em with safety pins and kept a 5 gallon bucket in the shower to soak 'em in after the poop was scrubbed out in the toilet. I changed my share and we only used throw-aways when traveling until we got where we were going. Oregon toilet water is cold!!
