A senior Chinese leader says his country will not become a multi-party democracy or adopt other Western-style political reforms

"We have made a solemn declaration that we will not employ a system of multiple parties holding office in rotation," said Mr Wu, chairman of the standing committee of the NPC.

He said if that happened the gains made by the country over the last 30 years, since it launched economic reforms, would be lost - and perhaps worse.

"It is possible that the state could sink into the abyss of internal disorder," he said in a speech on the work of the standing committee over the past year.

This has been the standard line from the party for the past 10 years. South Korea and Taiwan didn't have their growth hurt when they democratized, in fact it went up.

If democracy would be bad for China, then democracy would be bad for any war loving nation like Iraq or Iran. But i believe that democracy is good for the changes needed to accomplish peace. Why not? Democracy is not the point for fulfilling the dreams of Libya, and dictatorship could be right there.

Democracy is developed in those nations of the middle east in order to keep the comfortable economic contacts of American imperialistic type corporate world under these leaders' thumbs.

many of these places became springboards for inward fdi in china. so your point is correct, but misleading. if china was open, would taiwan have been as successful? probably not, no.

    what is meant by 'democratize'?
adopt western liberal norms and parliamentary government? nonsense. i spit on that.
the mainland Chinese government is not communist, but that's no reason for it to become a liberal democracy. reformist vote-mongering is disgusting.
parliamentary government in the USA, Europe, etc. is the principle of bourgeousie triumphant. Welfare is a stopgap for failing capitalism. it is fascism in tweed, proclaiming its love for mankind.
this is why i hate liberals.
