so typically i have a fro if i let my hair grow out much, but over the last four or five months (i'm not really sure when it started) my hair started to dread itself. it's probably been a year and a half since i last cut my hair and by now it's really starting to dread up pretty nicely. for a while though i wasn't really paying much attention to how they were forming and i ended up with one or two of my dreads getting a little thicker than i might have wanted. thick enough that they could really be two dreads. theyre livable, but i was wondering if anyone had any advice on maybe how i could split them? theyre pretty well formed toggether and pretty tough. but really theyre more like two dreads formed together than one big dread. also, any other advice for a dread newbie would be greatly appreciated. maintenance, etc.
Your best bet is to rip from the root. If you use scissors you're gonna cause a lot more damage than ripping. You seem to be going ok with neglect so don't worry about maintaining them, just rip them apart if you see more congos appearing.
yeah, if you must separate them, i'd rip from the root, like jimbo said. however, you may end up doing a lot of damage to them and setting them back to "baby dread" status.
yeah i did this with a bunch of mine back in the day and they were super fragile for a few weeks. like, i was worried they might fall off if they were touched too rough. i started from both the root and tip, splitting both a couple inches each day for a couple days then jumping into it and ripping right up the middle. hurts like a bitch. as for maintenance, palmrolling a couple times a week might help them round out, and might give some length to them over time. crocheting will take in loose hairs but apparently it dries your hair out? i had really dry dreads and someone on here suggested that could be why, so maybe do it sparingly. or nothing at all. pictures?
as far as making them rounder...your locks will basically grow in the shape of the section along with variations caused by big knots and such. palmrolling is kind of fruitless in my opinion. it also loosens the hairs sometimes.
I say let there be big dreads. I personally like big dreads here and there. If they're that well formed together than ripping them a part might not only be difficult but it could really damage the dreads. *hugs* Jess
I quite agree, about palmrolling. I don't think it does a damn thing. Try tieing a knot with string, and rolling it between your fingers. Yeah, doesn't do a damn thing, other than loosen the knot. About ripping from the root, that's something I've never gotten. You can rip AT the root if you ripped from the tips and want to get the last webbing, but generally if there's one tip, it's one lock, and other than making a bloody mess, that's just how it's going to be. If you have multipule tips, rip from the tips, IMO. Will cause less damage as it follows the different cords of knots, instead of dividing in ways at the root that it might differ from what's happening at the tip. Fuck ripping anyway. Diameter is my goal, next time around. Nine or ten locks sounds about right.
I Wouldn't......He'll End Up Looking Like A Man Wearing A Bunch Of Beavers On His Head.... Cheers Glen.
i like fat dreads! as long as they're in a good place, like not on your temples or anything. the only reason i ripped mine was because i had about six or seven fat dreads on the back of my head and like 25 slimmer ones on the sides and front. i kind of forgot about them for like 7 months haha
