k, i thought this might be a good place to share your first experience, ever, with dreadlocks. if this has been done already or whatever, just say so. first time like, the first time you ever saw them, whether in public or through media of some sort, and your initial reaction. my first time was downtown in my hometown. i was about 13 years old and it was really overcast and cold outside. my friends and i were walking back to my house and we all just kind of stopped and stared at this girl who must have been like 17 or 18 with this amazing mane of long, black dreads with little blonde tips. these puppies came down to her waist and were just wonderful. some of my friends made comments about how they were nasty and gross, but my girlfriend and i couldn't stop talking about how neat they were. looking back that chick was probably like "who the fuck are these tiny people and why are they staring at me" that night i went home and told my dad about it and the next day he got me a hair cut haha! but yeah, gorgeous stuff, and i've been intrigued ever since. i continued to see her around town for the next couple years and my heart totally jumped everytime, like "that's her!". and she'll never know!
Yeah it has, but no matter, that goes for almost every thread that is posted. Someone I knew had some awesome neglect locks which I was pretty amazed by, so I was intrigued and wanted to grow some myself. Some years later I did just that. :sunny:
I don't remember the first time I saw dreads, but I do remember the day I decided to have dreads. like a year ago I was riding my bike to go to classes and while waiting a green light I saw this tall blonde girl on the sidewalk with beautiful loong dreads mixed with wavy loose hair that went down her back, most beautiful dreads I have ever seen. Saw her twice that week, then she disappeared.
I saw the commercial at the ripe age of 9. I called and said, "miss cleo!, how is it you can perform these marvelous acts and grace all these people with questions with your prescence." She replies, "it's all in di har babeh." And then I charged 13.25 to my dads card and was like holy shit, I'm gonna need some dreads one day.
I've seen them since I was a baby. My dad used to be a reggae musician (he played keyboard) and his entire band had huge, natural dreads. I remember, he had a good friend named Bunni who was 6'7 and had the thickest Jamaican accent ever... He had these huge dreads that went to his waist. His living room was amazing... He had an entire starport from Star Wars MADE OUT OF LEGO! It moved when he turned it on, and had real lights and everything. That dude was so bad ass. This was back when I lived in Vancouver... Not too many like that in The Maritimes.
that does sound bad ass! i was a little kid in the 90s haha, and i lived on the outskirts of a small city and honestly didn't watch television too often, so i was out of that loop. and it's not a question, it's a chance to remember a time or a place where you saw something that hit you so hard, you'd go out of your way to make it happen
We're the same age! I'm pretty much just from white suburbia. The teens in my area really hopped on the dreadlock bandwagon and I'd see them driving around in cars leftover from the 80s blasting their grunge music out the window, not caring about anything and looking all cool. Looking back, they were probably all toolbags. But let me tell you... when summer rolls around I'll be driving in my 90s throwback car, blasting the Smashing Pumpkins and rocking my dreads too. Product of my generation, or what?
A friend of mine's brother went AWOL for a while and nobody saw him until returned a few years later sporting some kick ass pitch black dreads which went all the way down the middle of his back. What intrigued me so much was the fact that he had bone straight hair. I used to think he was such a bad ass! I still think so though. This was more than 15 years ago. His hair is all the way down his ass now already. PS: I am also following some awesome Youtubers and their journey. Two in particular. I forget their aliases now but will update this thread with a link to their videos. The one guy is on HF but I don't recall seeing the other guy on HF. I'll update soon. I hope someday, someone says that I inspired them to get dreads. Lol.
did not realize that haha! i totally lived under a rock, my dad is kind of a political figure because he heads the provincial snowmobile association and whatnot and we were raised to be very outdoorsy, so i didn't really start watching tv or listening to music until i was like 13, so sad. there was a chick on my block who babysat me though and she had a tattoo :O my dad wasn't impressed when she bought me temporary ones haha, i was born to be wild he had no idea
Had To Have A Long Hard Think About This, And Have Come To The Conclusion It Would Have To Be A Student From The Local University Many Years Ago.... When I Started Taking Holidays Up North At The Hippiefied Town Of Byron Bay They Were Everywhere, But Unfortunatly Most Of The Wearers Were Hippies That Hadn't Showered Or Washed Them *or themselves*For Years.... I Wanted Mine Back In 1996 But I Decided Not To After Seeing These People.... Nowdays Dreads Are Viewed As Just Another Hairstyle, And 19 Months Later I Couldn't Be Happier With My Decision...:2thumbsup:. Cheers Glen.
This is the one guy: https://www.youtube.com/user/KnottyMarcusNappy#p/u/2/F4ji5Yiiq5c He is on HF. And this is the other guy. https://www.youtube.com/user/MDMdreads#p/u/17/5OTrmO3OkrM I dont recall seeing him here on HF. Both of them inspired me ALOT!!! Check them out and let me know what you guys think.
Really can't recall when I first saw dreads. I grew up in San Francisco, saw many a 'dread head', but can't remember when that first was. Since birth I guess. My mom however, growing up in a small town in Illinois didn't see them until she was a in her late/teens early 20's- after coming to CA, I presume. She fell in love and is rocking them beautifully now.
