I always wished they'd used Nico more... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN_ObHOX8iU&feature=related"]YouTube - The Velvet Underground & Nico - I'll be your mirror.mp4

"Sunday Morning"'s a good example, Pax. I understand it was originally supposed to be sung by Nico - and it seems custom-made for her - but internal band politics or whatever.... One of my favorite VU tracks, yet one that hardly ever seems to get mentioned...Lady Godiva's Operation. John Cale singing. This kind of represents to me the direction the band could have taken...Cale and Nico were what made them so edgy for me...once they'd gone, they got a bit too predictable and, well, nice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hLAp6K7wXQ"]YouTube - The Velvet Underground - Lady Godiva's Operation Lady Godiva here dressed so demurely Pats the head of another curly haired boy, just another toy Sick with silence she weps sincerely saying word that have oh so clearly been said so long ago Draperies wrapped gently 'round her shoulder Life has made her that much bolder now that she's found out how Dressed in silk, latin lace and envy Pride and joy of the latest penny faire pretty passing care Hair today now dipped in the water Making love to every poor daughter's son isn't it fun Now today propping grace with envy Lady Godiva peers to see if anyone's there and hasn't a care Doctor is coming the nurse thinks SWEETLY Turning on the machines that NEATLY pump air the body lies bare Shaved and hairless what once was SCREAMING now lies silent and almost SLEEPING the brain must have gone away Straped securly to the white table ether caused the body to wither and writhe underneath the white light Doctor arrives with knife and baggage sees the growth as just so much cabbage that now must be cut away Now come the moment of Great! Great! Decision! The doctor is making his first incision One goes here--one goes there The ether tube's leaking says someone who's sloppy the patient it seems is not so well sleeping The screams echo up the hall Don't panic someone give him pentathol instantly Doctor removes his blade cagily slow from the brain By my count of ten the head won't move .

Thanks for the compliment Mr. F. Back in the summer of '68 in Vancouver,Canada they played for an entire weekend at a place called the Retinal Circus. Even though they didn't have Nico with them, they still sounded great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwzaifhSw2c"]YouTube - velvet underground - venus in furs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZH82l_ie9M&feature=related"]YouTube - The Velvet Underground - There She Goes Again PAX
I think Venus In Furs must have been the first VU track I ever heard...I think on some compilation or other, back in the early 70s. The very title sounded decadant [I didn't know about the book it was named for at the time, nor understood the subject matter !]. A sort of biography in sound by a fan...incidentally I always heard the line A close encounter of the thirdest kind as the furtive kind...which may be equally appropriate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOGIPF6rVqo&feature=related"]YouTube - The Modern Lovers- The Velvet Underground They were wild like the USA A mystery band in a New York way Rock and roll, but not like the rest And to me, America at it's best How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. A spooky tone on a Fender bass Played less notes and left more space Stayed kind of still, looked kinda shy Kinda far away, kinda dignified. How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. Now you can look at that band and wonder where All that sound was coming from With just 4 people there. Twangy sounds of the cheapest types, Sounds as stark as black and white stripes, Bold and brash, sharp and rude, Like the heats turned off And you're low on food. How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. Like this... Wild wild parties when they start to unwind A close encounter of the thirdest kind On the bandstand playing, everybody's saying How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. Well you could look at that band And at first sight Say that certain rules about modern music Wouldn't apply tonight. Twangy sounds of the cheapest kind, Like "Guitar sale $29.99," Bold and brash, stark and still, Like the heats turned off And you can't pay the bill. How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. Both guitars got the fuzz tone on The drummer's standing upright pounding along A howl, a tone, a feedback whine Biker boys meet the college kind How in the world were they making that sound? Velvet Underground. Wild wild parties when they start to unwind A close encounter of the thirdest kind On the bandstand grooving, everybody moving How in the world are they making that sound? Velvet Underground. .

One of my all-time favorite bands! I love most of their songs with Lou Reed, but my favorite VU songs are Femme Fatale (about Miss Edie Sedgwick), Satellite of Love, and Stephanie Says.
I love Velvet Underground... Lady Godiva operation is disturbing, and I love so much the piano in I'm waiting for the man.
