This story was annouced on a goverment website in February and really hasn't received much press here in the US.

The story infers that the countries are merging for all purposes with no input from the citizens what so ever. It's stated they are trying to keep it quite until they can put a favorable spin on it. Link below

I love how people here see a closer relationship between two of the world's largest trading partners in an effort to reduce regulatory redtape between the two and also make it so products from both nations can fit into both nation's quality/safety, ect controls to facilitate easier trade is OMG AMERICA AND CANADA ARE MERGING.

    While the idea is kind of scary, I noticed this in the article;

I'm not really all that clear on what exactly the deal is, but it might just be a way to stimulate the American economy for the next two years.

Hell no. Many Americans seem to think this. It's in no way true. Harper definitely wants it that way, but that's about it.

What's good for Canada is good for the US and vice versa. Almost 75% of Canadian exports are going to the US, while half their imports come from the US. About 18% of both American imports and exports come/go to Canada I believe. The percents are smaller, but given the huge size of the US economy the sheer amount of dollars involved. it's seriously important too since a lot of our trade is in commodities, food, resources, minerals, ect, the building blocks of any economy.

Except for Quebec, can't a joint American-Canadian army just deal with that place already.

Quebec is like the dim witted foster child that we have to put up with. Can't kick them out, they'd call the authorities. So instead we leave them alone while they bitch and moan about pointless issues, you know, let them cry it out.

Free weed Thursdays followed by free poutine Fridays for all of North America.

    Except Quebec.

I'd be down with Canada merging with the US if it meant a more even and properous economy and market for both countries. Except I think the US should adopt more Canadian style laws, be easier on crime and quit attacking so many countries for their oil supplies.

If Canada really did merge with the US Quebec would really start talking about separating.

Until the US attacks them and kicks all the natives out.

I'd be more fine with this if the west coast and north east United States merged with BC and eastern Canada. Alberta and such seem like they'd be more at home with the mid-west states.

I don't think BC or any of the eastern provinces would ever have it, especially BC though. I could really only see Ontario doing it, it's quite different from the rest of Canada. Probably the most "Americanized" province.

Anybody have any info if this will somehow effect citizenship laws?

Will this make it easier for Canadians to become Americans?
Will there still be the need for the million miles of red tape to become an American Citizen?

I can't read links from work, but please post them if there are any-I'll check when I get home.

Nothing, it doesn't effect anything at all. It's just two countries trying to reduce trade barriers.

Sorry wasn't making it big as any kind of insult against you or anything, just making it so everyone else who comes here and reads the title and doesn't start rambling about the New World Order.

It's really not right if you ask me, they merge, but bend the laws that fit high-class moneymakers, right-wingers and the government. Laws that allow economic and trade problems to vanish...but for the people? Nah...They would never make gaining citizenship easier on either end, the US would never adopt Canada's medical system or vice versa, and Canada's multiculturalism would turn melting pot like it is in the US. Even if people were optimistic about this, it would do nothing for us.

I'd be ok with a US-Canadian merger, as long as we could kick out Connecticut.
    ;)
