thats one thing we definitely do better than a lot of other forums, religious discussions. we share our beliefs more freely around here i think, and those who try to come in and push us around dont last very long.
i think we are just closer here. we are all interested in different things, and mostly thats ok for everyone. i will admit to getting my panties in a wad occasionally, but not without good reason (IMO anyway)

That's bullshit in my opinion. It is a form of censorship. And this is called a free speech forum.

What should be done is to create a new unmoderated subforum where, if a thread gets too heated with debate it gets ugly, if someone is trolling, if someone says something very offensive, that post(s) should be split into a new thread in the unmoderated forum. Not deleted or locked.

Anything goes in the unmoderated forum (unless it contains illegal imagery).

In the unmoderated forum, you can troll as much as you want, flame and debate as much as you want, joke around as much as you want.

most of us keep a civil tongue. sometimes threads are closed, but not deleted. some threads are deleted completely. there are rules. usually if you break them extensively you get banned. personal attacks are a form of free speech, but they are not allowed. this forum is still private, Skip's word is law, right?

Free speech should not come at somebody elses expense or human rights period.

 

Banning is also wrong. That is a free speech killer right there.

Actually, there've been plenty of other forums that practice this.

If a person is to be banned just for being an ass to other members, then just place him in the unmoderated forum and prohibit him from posting in other places until he can negotiate with the admin to behave himself better.

Your bullshit call is itself bullshit. Well half bullshit, at least.

I think that there should be some moderation (aka censorship), since things can go to shit easily. And then people get driven away from the forums. If every thread can be hijacked, turned into the verbal equivalent of jerry springer, polluted with spam and trolling, it would be a disaster. And I think that there are some under or unmoderated forums elsewhere that have completely gone to shit.

Also, if someone posted 8,000 threads a day, and added 8,000 posts to every other thread, they would effectively take over, and through their own freedom of speech, deny freedom of speech to others.

On the other hand, you are right to point out the problems of excessive moderation. Some troll posts are interesting and worth posting on, even if some or all of the info is fabricated.

Also, I think that there should be a place for every opinion. There is a holocaust denial thread on the forums, and I'm glad that it has not been deleted. I think it's probably a good idea though that it was moved to the "pure bull" forum.

So I think I agree that there should be some forums that are much less strictly moderated, and that it would be better in many cases to limit some posters to the forum equivalent of the underworld rather than ban them outright.

Legally though, Skip can do what he wants for the most part with HF.

Seriously, if you suggest changes and they are ignored, maybe the best thing to do is to start your own forum.

 

All the troll posts would move into the unmoderated forum under a new thread. If the person kept up, they would be detained their until they agreed to straighten up. Jerry Springer style drama would take place in that forum. Nobody has to participate there unless they want to. I was part of planet ganja .com until they lost funding and they had a similar set up. Some of the troll posts they allowed in the unmoderated forum they called "The Shark Tank" got to be real hilarious. Overly-sensitive people were hardly ever seen posting there.

Then banning may be an exception.

If/when that day happens, I'll leave hipforums forever.

For now I can trust that Skip to be a good moderator. I understand he can do whatever he wants. I never had any problems with him. But suppose he was to ignore all new suggestions, the website will never improve.

 

i kinda like it how it is. and i trust Skip in his great hip-forumy wisdom to make only those changes that benefit this broad community.

 

I dont know who you think is gonna fucking move all those threads around and monitor people...what?..you think there is a small army of people working for skip that he can afford or even should afford to pay to uphold the actual meaning of free speech as you are interpreting it?The ''bounds of society'' are a living breathing thing that change and adapt to the times..it is impossible to write them out so instead we use ''guidelines''
