I had a couple of crowns done along with the removal of metal fillings replaced with something else..all at the same time. I went to lunch directly from the Dr.'s office. That's when a wedge of steak became stuck in my esophagus, and stayed stuck for many hours. I was patiently giving my body time; despite the discomfort level (which sucked a lot).
Until the person I was living with realized it was time to take action.
I grabbed a bucket and laid faced first on my stomach on the edge of the bed, with my body hanging over the edge; from rib cage down. My helper began patting and smacking my back; up and down my spine. I realized we were getting somewhere, when I felt the movement of the object. I decided I'd inflict vomiting upon myself; which was successful and when the steak made its’ appearance the bite size fuckin' thing had become the size of a half candy bar!
Although, this was approx six years ago; I recall clearly the feeling of being "reborn".

I still have reoccurring episodes; I can’t seem to place exact causes for onsets. I know anxiety plays a roll. I still wonder if I had a reaction to material used that day at the dentist; causing, perhaps swelling or damage. I share meals daily with a very fast eater! Only I make damn sure that I chew and take my time. Since the first time; I have been able to get myself to relax at times when this has occurred and it helps occasionally. There are times that I experience so much discomfort that I have to induce vomiting for relief. Other than this occasional irritating, painful and at times embarrassing issue I contend with; life is great.

Thanks for your interest and your comments

if this was a raw steak i doubt you would have choked on it, see cooking can be very dangerous indeed since it makes the meat so rough and hard instead of soft and slippery :)

Yeah that's interesting . I bet that really sucked and was scary . It could cause panic and really get worse .

I bet a lot or most of choking problems are indeed , a direct result of us eating to fast .

I also know I myself have almost choked on steak , more than once ! As a direct result of eating to fast and not chewing properly . Or if the steak is too tough and hard to chew apart. Taking the chance to swallow instead of removing to cut with a knife .

Good heads up on the steak thing !

I always assumed it was just me .

You're right slowing down is the key .

I have had pills stick in my throat, it's a really gross and uncomfortable feeling. I prefer the coated ones for this reason.

Hey Papa- Thanks. And yeah it wasn’t an experience I’d wish on anyone.
Also; Nope it's definitely not just a you thing, for sure. We all need to be conscious of our eating habits.
I have an aunt a quiet reserved women; who also suffers periodic food/esophagus issues. So aside from the potential cause being dental material; I'm under the impression that tension and anxiety play a role here. So I try to keep conscious of how I'm feeling, before I begin eating. So when I need to focus and relax first; I prefer that to such terrible discomfort.

Forgive me for asking, but what on earth possessed you to try to eat steak after dental work? Just seems like a bad idea to me.

I hate hate hate when pills get stuck, though, and you have to be really really careful to make sure they go down because that happened to my ex once and he ended up with a horrible ulcer in his esophagus because the pill dissolved in his throat and it was apparently kind of acidic and ate through his mucus membrane.
