I'm considering moving to St. Augustine, FL. My friend has a home in St. Augustine and she has the best of both worlds. She works in New York during the summer months and goes back to Florida for the winter. I've had it with New York. It really has turned into a God forsaken shithole in the last couple of years. And it's so fucking expensive to live here. We have a mayor who is getting a Bill passed for no smoking in public parks and on beaches. Can you imagine? What next, are they going to put some kind of a meter on the outside of your home to detect when you're smoking inside? I can't take the pace anymore, everyone is in a big hurry going nowhere, doing nothing. I worked in Manhattan for years and did the rat race -- I hated every minute of that. Luckily, I've been self-employed for the past 11 years, so I can work from home anywhere in the world.

I've never been to Florida before, but at this point I'm willing to give it a shot. I just wanted a little input on what it's like to live in Florida from some Floridians. I've done some research and I see that the rents are really cheap in Florida. That's one of the reasons I want to get out of NY. The other reason is not having to deal with winters anymore. Would I be able to get weed easily in Florida? My other question is, what are people like in Florida? Are they more laid back? Sorry for all the questions. I'm so sick of people with loud mouths and attitudes, and ugly is in your face all the time here in NY. I'm a pretty laid back lady and I just want to live my life and be happy until the shit hits the fan.

    Peace,
    Jas

I don't know the low down, but I've heard nice things about Florida.

If you can live anywhere in the world, you might want to check out other countries. Probably much cheaper that way.

You know, it would be interesting to live in another country. I thought about Europe, specifically Amsterdam which would be right up my alley. But unfortunately, I've never been outside of the U.S. and really wouldn't consider it at this point. Thanks for your input.

It depends on where you live in Florida. St. Augustine is a beautiful city. As far as weed goes, it's around, just don't get caught. We have some pretty harsh penalties and the cops can be complete dicks.

I would say stay away from the South. I live in Miami and it's a real shithole. West Palm Beach was alright but a bit on the quiet side. I think Tallahassee or some city up north would be nicer.

I moved to NY from St. Augustine in 2003, with plans to move back to Central Florida just as soon as I can get the house in NY sold.

St. Augustine was AWESOME. Pretty cool people for the most part, but to be perfectly honest, the area has become extremely overpopulated. Was there for a visit in 2012 and couldn't believe the changes since I lived there from 2000-2003. Moving back to FL for the exact reasons you mentioned: TOO Expensive! Tired of paying NYS taxes, and dealing with the never-ending winters.

People are the same everywhere you go; there's assholes everywhere just as there are good people. You just have to hope that you''ll meet some cool people along the way who will help you avoid such assholes.

Weed is exceptionally easy to get, especially in St. Augustine. Unfortunately, there's a lot of people who will try and rip you off as well.

Rents CAN be cheap. Your best bet to find a place that's reasonable is to be able to offer at least 3-6 month's rent up front to a landlord in addition to the first/last/security. Not everyone can pull this off, of course.

Th best way to transition into FL is to lose any NY accent you might have immediately. Oddly enough, no one could ever pinpoint my accent, whether I was living in FL, NC, or NY.

If you have any other questions, PM me.

    Hope this helped...
