Hi everyone, thanks for looking. If you could, please refrain from flaming/trolling. I've decided that I want to make a big change in my life. I want to branch out in the world, meet new people, explore new land, have new adventures. The situation right now: I work as a grill cook at a restaurant and I enjoy the people I work with and just being fortunate enough to work. I live in Milwaukee, WI and enjoy my friends & family, surroundings, etc. With all that being said, I stand behind my aforementioned desire to branch out in the world. The problem and where I'm mainly looking for advice: I don't know where to start. I'm open to anything from landscape, construction, farm hand, fishing, basically any migrant work that is usually available. Maybe migrant work is a bad term, to be clear I want to be in one spot for at least a year.. not moving from place to place like a hobo. I do have enough money to make the necessary arrangements to travel via air plane to wherever it is I can go. It's just the matter of finding somewhere that I can have somewhere to live and make enough money to not fall on my face in debt. Perhaps there are schools abroad that offer free tuition? I've read somewhere that schools in Europe have free schooling. Not really sure on the validity of that though. Perhaps there are programs for farm hands internationally that offer housing for getting your hands dirty? I don't know what's all out there and it's some what hard to find. So for those of you out in different countries, please let me know what your country has to offer! If you're wondering my qualifications/training/education.. I'm 21, I have a lot of cash handling experience, ServeSafe certification (food handling), CPR/first aid/Life guard license, and nearly three completed years of University level college.
Dude, just finish college, it's a bitch going back at 26 and realising your not going to earn the degree you could have had at 21 until you are 30 and mopping floors in the meantime. Also construction sucks balls, well it does here in the UK anyway. In a decade we have gone from anyone with a strong back and some common sense being able to earn reasonable money for working hard, to a system where you need half a dozen qualifications just to get on site, and your typical labourer reduced to pushing a broom around all day for minimum wage. This however may be something you could look into http://www.wwoof.org.uk/ essentially farms that will give you room and board in exchange for labour.
This post has been reported, thank you for helping to make this site a cleaner and safer place for everyone! Continuing to do so will only result in more reports and I will go to an administrator.
Mostly refer to it as Seasonal work here in Australia. Australia is a great place to come work on farms and enjoy the laid back lifestyle we have. Keep it in mind and good luck on your journey.
NF ... To Pypes You Listen! ... without the education you have much less options Finish your studies, make that intern work too. Don't f around until you have that qualification under your belt, cause that is the thing that will open up options Also, Pypes is bang-on about the current state of UK employment; it's also happening in the EU ... as the recession has been deepening, there is less and less 'work for migrants' as you phrased it. In 2008 I completed a MA, distinctions and stuff, nailed the thesis with a distinction too, the whole toot ... and walked straight into looking for work during an emerging recession with a catch phrase 'British Jobs For British People’. With the MA degree and the ones I finished before that ... and after a year of unemployment ... I finally found work walking dogs in the day and cleaning printing press equipment in a factory at night. Every penny I earned then went into neutralising the debt incurred by that knock … never mind how miserable I have become since that messed up reality kicked in. Don't f*ck around now days, you will get your head bitten off very quickly by this world we live in, and when you finally do get spat out, you'll have a massive gap in your CV to account for for the rest of your working years, and a reality defined by wasted time and wasted money … and that my friend, is when age does start becoming an issue Get to know the game, learn how to make the rules work for you and get a game plan together ... Now Go! D
what Pypes said is happening in my country too you can't get a half decent job without a professional or technical degree, in various cases you even need a posgraduate. Idk much about the rest of southamerica but what I do know is that, unless you have an awesome hability (creative or whatever), it's gonna be really hard without a degree (or lots of money) so finish your degree first, then travel the world. You could even get a job that demands traveling
Unfathomable debt is a lot easier to deal with if you have: A- A good understanding of mathematics B- Work a job that pays $100k / year Both of these things can be attained via the medium of having a degree.
NFL: check out this site http://helpx.net/ it's like wwoofing, but it's not exclusive to Organic farms. I used this site for traveling around NZ and it was incredible! let me know if you plan on signing up because I think I can get you a small discount (it's fairly cheap anyways) pypes: aye, but not always the only way to happiness
