Now, aside from the fact the program already had record enrollment this year, and expects next year to once again break a record; considering the massive amount of snowstorms the east coast has had this year, I find this to be the utmost irony possible for beginning of February.

As someone who lives in New England, and also someone from a family who's relied on heating assistance to not have to wear 4 layers of clothes during the winter, and also also as someone who's been hit by god knows how many snow storms this year, the fuck Obama, the fuck.

Thread could also be titled, Obama to United States: Don't worry I'm working at flank speed to make sure I don't get reelcted.

 

So Obama doesn’t get re-elected who do you put in his place that would keep such programmes?

As I pointed out in another thread the problem is that the US has two opposing viewpoints BOTH in control, the neo-liberal tax cutters and the Keynesian social schemers, which is not good but can just about work when things are booming but can quickly result in deficit at any other time.

Something somewhere has to give.

The neo-liberal answer is to keep the tax breaks that mainly benefit the rich few and cut the social schemes such as heating assistance that mainly benefit the poorer many.

The question comes down to who runs the country, the many or the few?

What happens if popular schemes like this heating assistance are taken away, would the democratic process allow that and if not are the few then going to think that maybe the problem is democracy?

Or is the question - do you have a true democratic choice or can you only vote for the bad or the worse than bad.

 

We give billions to Israel a fascist state, billions to Egypt a now Islamic state plus the 10's of billions to other nations that don't want anything to do with us but cash the check, yet when our own citizens that are flipping the bill need not apply?

I guess we are not United States citizens no more but world citizens that need to wait in line.

I wonder if the government controlled media cough, cough, (ABC, NBC, MSNBC, FOX, CBS, CNN, C-SPAN) will be reporting on in home hypothermia deaths in the coming year, or will they cover that up too like the section 8 riots down in Detroit last year?

A lot of people up north rely on heap to help with the heating bill like myself. Now I got welfare banging down my door sending me letters that I owe them like three grand from when I was on it like a year ago for only 3 months and if I don't pay it I'll get 19 months in lock up. If I would have known that I had to pay that shit back I would have never applied.

I would have just sold more drugs.

There are so many unneccessary pork barrel expenditures that could easily be cut to reduce the deficit. I feel like when Obama decides instead to cut needed social programs , he's really saying "Look at me, I'm not really a socialist! vote for me 2012!"

Remember a month ago when he said we need to freeze all discretionary spending for years except the military. He's trying to appeal to people who think he's a Kenyan born socialist.

I would be extremely disappointed if Obama backed something like this. Cut the oil company subsidies-cut the foreign aid-trim some of the death machine budget--but not the help for our citizens that need it. I'll reiterate tho,that I believe the repubs will be more likely to pull something like this. Fuck.

Well as has been said before, the US seems to have basically two right wing parties one of the centre right and one far more to the right.

In the UK we had a similar problem with New Labour and the Conservative Party in the Blair years (and the jury is still out on the present labour leadership)

To for anyone who’s left leaning they haven’t a choice they either don’t vote and get the further right in, or they hold their noses and vote for a party that in the main doesn’t do what they want.

The thing is that in a money based economy the people with more money are likely to have more power and influence. In the US that is even more true than in the UK (we have the BBC which at the least tries to be balanced and is therefore smeared as being full of ‘lefties’ by the right wing media, especially by Rupert Murdoch).

And since these people on the whole are right leaning (some extremely so, see the links below about the Koch Brothers summit) then the message and money they pump out is of the right.

And it is likely to get worse in the US because of the right wing packed Supreme Courts ruling on campaign spending.

The thing is what is to be done to counter the wealth based message in a country where many people still think Fox News is fair and balanced.

Obama shifted things into gear with massive weatherization programs when he entered office.. Im not gonna all the link work for you, find it yourself..

2ndly: Many newer technologies are being used with heating cooling and weatherization. The cost cutting programs are nothing more now than a money shuffle to something else. Possibly more beneficial to all and the environment.

More eduction, and home inspections of those in need. There definitely needs to be some policing of energy consumption, when they are getting it for free practically.. Then their homes need doors and windows. Not to let the heat out. :love:
