    In the 2012 draft budget Obama submitted to Congress on Monday he included a $5.50 "passenger inspection fee" for Canadians. He proposed the idea because it would help pump millions back into Washington and would help pay for the ever-increasing security at airports. Stephen Harper surprisingly doesn't agree with the idea.

    No problem. Just won't bother with doing anything across the border anymore.

    First it was a passport and now a fee. I liked going to Detroit but it isn't that important.

    Maybe if the government just randomly muggs people on the street they could make another few million dollars every month.

    Help pay off out debt, yea fucking right. 90 million is a few pennies to what our national debt is, it wont do a damn thing. If anything its just making a few special people more rich. If they started doing this to mexico as well it might help with the illegal alien crossing. Maybe even get some local citizens some jobs, who knows, hard to say. All in all i'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

    Yeah, like this'll help raise funds...

    It's another one of Obama's ways of raising taxes and then denying it later.

    This idea isn't new. When I traveled to Ecuador, I had to pay a $38usd fee to leave the country. That's how it is in many places around the world.

    Well, as a person who does not go the to states often, 5.50 really is not that bad. But then again... Free is better.

    Still, why not just charge the Americans $5.51 to get into Canada, that will show them!

    Canadians come down to North Dakota and do a lot of camping and shopping in Grand Forks. That brings a bunch of revenue into our state. So, he can shove his 5.50.....

    A question many Canadians are asking;

    Why should we pay towards your (US) debt?

    The charge doesn't apply if you drive the US, only if you fly. In that way, the reasoning that it goes to airport security is reasonable... but the security to get to the US is in Canada (or the country you're coming from...)

    5.50 isn't very much. I suppose the argument some would take is that flying is a privilege (there are no rights when it comes to such services. Privilege is the replacement of rights) and that if you don't want to pay the fee that the service requires of you, just don't fly.

    It is very common for countries to levy fees on those entering or sometimes leaving their countries.

    I think that the amount is not unreasonable and if you can afford to travel paying that pittance is hardly a burden. That we may now have to pay that amount tends to irritate people. People are equally irritated over passports that are now required.

    It is only on air travel or ships so those who just pop back and forth across the border for social or shopping are not going to have to pay extra.

    I have no issue with it, simply the cost of traveling.
