UPDATE 2/15: Iran confirms the arrest of 1,500 protesters.

    UPDATE: 2/14:
Hundreds of thousands of protesters have flooded the streets in Iran, despite the local media and Internet blackout. This is what happens when a government tries to shutdown the Internet, people come out into the streets in thousands! Protests are continuing through the night. Some streets have been barricaded and protesters are controlling them while people call out from the rooftops "Death to Khamenei!"

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/14/iran-protests_n_822991.html

Iranians took to the streets today in the first big anti-government protest since 2009 in Iran's Day of Rage. They were met with tear gas and beatings from thousands of police and Basij militiamen. In what was supposed to be a peaceful march in solidarity with the Egyptian revolution, which was supported (verbally anyway) by the Iranian government, quickly turned violent once the protesters started shouting "death to the dictator".

The Internet and phone service in Iran has again been shutdown by the government.

It looks like the Iranian people, inspired by the Egyptian revolution are ready to again revolt against the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and rule by the Ayatollahs.

I heard that the government chided demonstrators for demonstrating, not for Egypt as advertised, but against the Iranian regime.

There is a difference in Iran in that the government has no secular arm to protect the people.

a lot is gonna depend (not unlike egypt) which stance the army will take .... then there are the 100 thousand or so revolutionary guards to consider as well

this has the potential to be very amazing... or very very messy

    good luck iran

So beatings & teargas = "chiding". What dictionary do you use?

It's just a matter of time. How much? Sooner or later in this modern world with the communication available. Maybe a week--maybe 50 years.

Rather security forces tried to justify their actions by saying the demonstrations gathered under false pretenses. Chided was a word used in a news report.

I wish that would happen here. >.>
I don't even think Australian police would know what to do if there was a fair dinkum riot.

The actions that are going to be taken during this riot have serious ramifications for the entire world. We all better pay close attention to this one.

One https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Pm6wbnaLOA&feature=player_embedded"]video, posted on Youtube (claiming to be from Monday's protests) shows people chanting, "political prisoners must be freed." A woman then cries that tear gas has been deployed, dispersing the crowd.
On the Facebook page used to organise the marches, there were also reports of shooting in or around Enghelab Square, as well as demonstrations in the cities of Mashhad, Shiraz and Kermanshah.

Looks like the protesters have taken over some streets in the city tonight. They're banging the war drums! Perhaps the Iranians are starting to wise up that the more force they use, the bigger the protests are going to get!

Is it "death to Khamenei" or "down with Khamenei"?

I was in the midddle of a large group of Iranian protesters back in 2009 and they were chanting in English, "Down with Khamenei, down with Iminadinnerjacket!!!"

It sounded a whole lot like the people in the second video.

Pakistan has in fact had plenty of protests in the past. It's media and political freedoms are also much greater than most other countries in the region. For example, it's 2 houses of parliament are not 3/4 controlled by one party
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliament_of_Pakistan

As for Iran, if the Green revolution failed I doubt these protests will go far. The Iranian security forces are way too good. I'm not even talking about the police, or the army, I mean the Republican Guard, an army inside an army, the SS of Iran basically.
