I agree with this. I have a friend that had a couple of rats; one developed a tumor and she decided not to take it to the vet because it was already a couple of years old, but it was obvious the poor rat was suffering. The other one died because we had an ice storm, the power in her house was out for three days, and she was snowed in somewhere else during that whole time. I felt bad for the rat once I found out it died from the cold; I feel like if it was a dog or a cat she would have made it more of a priority to get home and take care of her animal. I personally wouldn't have a rat because of the short life-span. I don't handle animal deaths very well and it would make me sad to get attached to a pet just to see it die a couple of years later. They are great pets though, very intelligient and they do become attached to people.
I used to have an albino dwarf rat named Opal. She was blind as a bat. Very pretty, though. Died of some kind of respiratory failure. I want to get a bigger one, someday. A grey one. My fiance insists it will be named Cheesers. I don't care so long as I get another girl. They smell enough without that strong musk the boys give off. Hamsters are more fun, in my opinion. Just saying. Rats are cool, though.
Rats or mice are the two pocket pets that I would not own. Not because there is anything wrong with them but I have a paranoia regarding them. They may be a tiny critter to most but to me they appear to be about 7 feet tall and weigh about 500 pounds. I know it is not rational but I could not have one as a pet.
I would never get one because my cat spends almost all her time hunting and eating rats... so that would be a pretty weird situation.
I had two rats for about three weeks once. Then one of them bit me so I set them free in the woods. Wich is a shame because I have to admit they were surprisingly endearing. And none of you rat lovers say "aww, they can't surbvive in the wild" they're the most intelligent and successful breed of rodent, they'll be fine. My pets don't bite me, that's my line in the sand.
I had a hamster who always would find a new way to excape from his tube cage enviornment thing. it perplexed me how he always found some way to get out of it over and over. We'd always be able to rangle him, but one day he obtained his freedom. I had assumed he starved or froze to death that winter... but over a year and a half later I saw my very same hampster scurry under the house. We lived in a trailer at the time and he was living under the house. (it was not a mobile home) He lived his full hamster life free. Since then I haven't felt right about owning any pets that you keep in cages. All they ever want is to get out of the cage... that aint right. I was in a cage once.
I felt that way about cages when I had a pet rabbit. It was so depressed in the cage that I set it free and it made a burrow under a log next to our house and lived there for a long full life and spent it's time hopping around the forest. Pet's are a lot smarter and more capable of surviving than people give them credit for.
Maybe a fish, I had a Oscar one time, and I really liked him. He was a tough little fucker. A black tiger oscar like this Those fish can fucking fight. Put a couple parannahs in a tank with it and I bet it'll kill most of them before it goes down. My kind of pet. I made the mistake of trying to get him a friend one day and he tore him apart. The only other things you can put in thier tank are snails and those sucker fish... and an oscar will eventually kill and eat them.. but they seem to let them stick around for a while first. It's weird
