Have any of you heard of her? In my music in culture class we were discussing her. We were discussing her performance "The Artist is Present" where she sits in a chair for 8 hours/day and people are free to come sit facing her for up to 15 minutes. She is completely passive and stoic throughout. My friend saw her in new york when she was doing the exhibit where she sits in a chair...he says its really intense and he had to get up before his 15 minutes were over because he couldn't handle it. He said the girl he went to the exhibit with ended up crying when she sat across from her. That seems pretty crazy to me.
And apparently so. Marina is an artist who is quite interested in the limits and pushing those limits of the human body. She once fastened her mouth to a mans and they shared each other's air until the oxygen ran out and both of them passed out from their lungs being filled with CO2. I heard quite a few of the participants started to weep at her performance. Yeah, that's pretty funny And she does just sit there. For 8 hours/day for 3 months.
That woman is a totem. The energy that surrounds her is incredible. I ve done tones of research on her and ended up making my diploma piece as a tribute to one of her performanses with Ulay. They were together for 10 years, living and working together, presenting themselves as one, an androgenus, a unity containing both male and female elements. All of their performanses were about this combining, connecting or confronting of male and female energy. You can really see how intense they lived through their life together, and after 10 years decided to make a spiritual journey which would end their relationship. Each of them walked the The Great Wall Of China starting from the two opposite ends and meeting in the middle. Ulay started from the Gobi desert and Marina from the Yellow Sea. After each of them walked 2500 km they met in the middle and said good-bye. I always kind of admired them and wondered how do you survive something like that, how can you find someone and live your love so intense in every way and then walk away? Marina said in the end: because, whatever you do, you are really alone." So true, and not necessarily sad once you make peace with it.
I saw her on that exhibit in NYC at Moma on her last day there, just one hour before she was going to get up in the middle of the day. She is retarded. She desperately wants an audience. There are some good things about her but I can't remember them.
She wants an audience so she is retarded? Are we in highschool? She just wants atention, she is stupid (finger pointing, giggle) No artist ever made their work so no one would see them. There is no such thing as making art "just for yourself", arts are a form of communication.
