A few of my favorites: If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us. ~ Hermann Hesse "Without words, without writing and without books there would be no history, there could be no concept of humanity." ~Herman Hesse Knowledge can be communicated, but wisdom cannot. A man can find it, he can live it, he can be filled and sustained by it, but he cannot utter or teach it. ~ Hermann Hesse " This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love." ~Martin Luther King "I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask, 'Mother, what was war?'" ~ Eve Merriam "Without words, without writing and without books there would be no history, there could be no concept of humanity." ~Herman Hesse
Not to denigrate any of the quotes provided, but... The Eve Merriam quote reminded me of a Jack Handy line I saw years ago, "I believe in making the world safe for our children, but not our children's children, because I don't think children should be having sex." In Eve Merriam's quote it would be, ""I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask, 'Mother, where did I learn to talk?' Silly I know, but my mind unfortunately never works in straight lines. The doctors have assured my family that I am harmless, and that I'll probably get better in another 70 or so years.
My dad always used to say, "When you're up to your asshole in alligators it's easy to forget your main objective was to drain the swamp." Stay Brown, Rev J
Here's a kind of universal wise quote, reiterated in slightly different words across the ages by a diverse bunch of ancient 'wise hippies'. THE GOLDEN RULE Brahmanism: This is the sum of duty: Do naught unto others which would cause you pain if done to you. : Mahabharata 5:1517 Christianity: All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them. : Matthew 7:12 Islam: No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother what which he desires for himself. : Sunnah Buddhism: Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful. : Udana Varga 5:18 Judaism: What is hateful to you, do not to your fellowmen. That is the entire Law; all the rest is commentary. : Talmud, Shabbat 31:a Confucianism: Surely it is the maxim of loving-kindness: Do not unto others that you would not have them do unto you. : Analects 15:23 Taoism: Regard your neighbor’s gain as your own gain, and your neighbor’s loss as your own loss. : T’ai Shag Kan Ying P’ien Zoroastrianism: That nature alone is good which refrains from doing unto another whatsoever is not good for itself. : Dadistan-i-dinik 94:5

I’m here to wake up to this day I’m here to dance the clouds away I’m here to live and sing my song And disappear into the Blessed One - Rumi
A Psalm of Life Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! -- For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each tomorrow Find us farther than today. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world’s broad field of battle, In the bivouac of life, Be not like dumb driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act, -- act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o’erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked broether, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us then be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
"Life I embrace you, I shall honor and disgrace you, Please forgive me if I replace you, You see I'm going through some pain, But now I see clearly, And the dawn is coming nearly, Though I'm Human and it's early, I swear I'll never forget again," Blues Traveler Stay Brown, Rev J
My favorite quote. I bolded my favorite parts. We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world." -Terrence Mckenna
