I guess I just want to see if there's anyone else out there in the same boat? It's a very strange thing for me because I've never before taken organized religion very seriously. my boyfriend is Mormon and we have an 11 month old child together. He wants to get more serious about his religion and we've been talking with some missionaries weekly for a few months now. Some coincidences have been happening lately that really have made me think that Mormon might be the right thing for me. Also, what does anyone here think about being a part of more than one religion at the same time? I still believe in a lot of Buddhism and Tao and although I've never been "baptised" Buddhist or anything () I don't think I'd have to exclude some of those ways of thinking just to be Mormon.
having grown up in the mormon church, witnessing the inner workings of the inner circles, there is no way i could recommend anyone be mormon. but really it shouldnt matter what i think. spirituality is only to be expirienced by the immediate perciever. just curious, do you really have a choice in the matter though? with your boyfreind being mormon i mean, and with a child. could he ever be happy if you and your child weren't "gods people"? (i know my mother cant. no matter how bright my inner light shines. its kind of sad really.) if you believe in buddhism and taoism then live that as well. anyone who would have you exclude your beliefs to fit into theirs, you should walk away from. it can be nice feeling apart of a group who come together for spirituality. though my advice would be not to trust too much in what anyone tells you about the divine. you are the divine's student directly, only you can interpret what you are being taught in this lifetime. p.s.-your child has beautiful eyes by the way....cosmic
ask your missonaries about d and c 132. what joseph smith called his most sacred revelation. then look at the history as to why john taylor abandoned this practice. (it had more to do with the US cavalry then god) the thing about the mormon religion is, the printing press was invented before the church came about. so the process is well documented if you look in the right places. iv never met a mormon who really knew mormon history. which should tell you somthing.
didn't the mormons retroactively baptise George Washington? if that's the case, i'd go with that option. that way you can still drink cough syrup and green tea, but still get to be a mormon after you die.
true, and as the saying goes, your sins are washed away at baptism. so really it only makes sence to wait till your dead. lol
of course. of course. This is my life. It's always my choice what I do with it. he's happy now with us how we are. he doesn't push this kind of thing on me in any kind of way. he just asked that I consider it. And he's only asked once. About our child, she's not going to be baptised. Just me. If Abryn wants to whenever she thinks she can decide that for herself, that's her thing this is kind of how Axyn's mother is, too, so he knows what it's like. I never have. thanks.
I was asking what does it matter that the printing press was supposedly invented before the mormon church? or after? I forget. but why does that matter?
I don't know about that. Although, I'm not too big on the whole alcohol and caffeine thing, either, by nature. but Axyn's dad drinks and his mom takes fucking energy pills and they're the most strict Mormons I've ever seen. Just because SOME mormons aren't into alcohol and caffeine doesn't mean you have to be against it to be mormon. If the way I am doesn't fit into a religion, then abviously I am not meant for it.
Are we talking Latter-Day Saints here? Because you are definitely NOT allowed to drink alcohol if you are of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the biggest Mormon denomination out there).
Oh so many topics lol first to your initial question of abandoning your other beliefs I would ask you to turn to the 13th Article of faith. "If there is anything virtous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things" So even though some PEOPLE you will encounter in mormonism may say that you should they are only speaking in ignorance. The word of wisdom i.e. the mormons health code was never revealed by way of commandment. Again PEOPLE of the church, prophets included have interpreted it as commandment and that is thus the present TRADITION not the present DOCTRINE. History- I would agree that most mormons know nothing of the "un-polished" history of their faith and that is what actually hurts them the most. it is true that a good number of people would probably abandon their faith if they got a hint of the history that is out there, but simply because they go no further. They find that the historical realities are not what they have been taught their entire lives (which is not the teachers fault either, they were raised with the same sanitized view of their leaders) and immediately they throw the baby out with the bathwater. Their is a quote I love and unfortunately can't remember the person who said it but it is " catholics have the doctrine of an infallible pope, but most catholics don't actually believe it, whereas mormons have a doctrine of truly fallible men that serve as their leaders, but most mormons dont actually believe it" D&C 132 it is amazing to note that from 1842 to nov 1843 joseph smith married nearly 30 women, but then abandoned adding any others for the last 8 months of his life and their is journal evidence to support that he believed he had indeed been deceived in this matter and him and Emma burned the revelation together (from Hyrum smiths journal) Which again lends credence to people being able to finally understand that MEN are not infallible and the statement of wilford woodruff which states that the prophet would not be able to lead THE PEOPLE astray is ALMOST always interpreted to mean like was said in a 1949 issue of the ensign "when the prophet speaks the thinking has been done" (note the next issue contained a retraction ordered by the then prophet to refute that claim) but it simply means the prophet can not destroy the work, which has been proven over and over throughout the churches history when you think of some of the absolutely ludicrous things prophets have said (you can find PLENTY of these statements online) I see it as amazing that some of these men could do the things they did based on some of the craziness they thought. But God always uses the weak to confound the mighty. noah was drunk and naked in his yard when god came to him, moses was "slow of speach" maybe a stutterer or some other speach impediment. The whole idea of any of these things being inerrant comes again from MEN the bible doesnt claim that it is infallible nor does the book of mormon, but MEN decided that it was
also, I'm not trying to start arguments, just increase awareness and hopefully people will start to look for these things themselves rather than take the advice of someone like me on a message board
Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer. This should answer some of your questions. Might want to read it by yourself, though.
I have read it and it is very interesting though I dont agree with his conclusions. They are based on the same TRADITION that is not DOCTRINE that i referred to earlier
It's been a few years since I read it, but as I recall, Smith cheated bankers, cheated with other men's wives and believed it was OK to have sex with children. And supposedly did. Not someone whose teachings I'd consider following. But-----many do.
