hi i'm new to the whole dreadlock thing. I started my dreads just before xmas had a lady do them it was with a crochet hook she used a little wax and tied them on the top with thread..i have taken the thread out and never used the wax after. i use saltwater and aloe on my hair when washing..ok the problem is i have tons of loops and my hair feels kind of dry and it is prickley to the touch and on my neck are they doing what they should..here's a few pictures of whats going on i can add more pictures if needed thanks for the help
Wait... are you washing with salt water and aloe? Neither of those will clean your hair. Aloe is just used to make the loose hairs stay down and salt water helps tighten dreads. Crocheted dreads do feel rather scratchy, but if you haven't crocheted since, in a month or so they should start feeling softer. Mine were started with crochet and only the very front dreads that I don't sleep on are still a little scratchy. But even those feel a ton better than when they were first done. I don't know how often you're using the salt water, but it's really drying, so you aren't supposed to use it all the time unless you think your hair can take the damage. And you complained about how dry your hair felt, so it might be wise to take a break from it for a little while. Baking soda and vinegar work well for most people for washing. If you aren't anti-poo, I use Suave clarifying shampoo and it works well for me. Washing is kind of trial and error until you figure out something that your hair and scalp like. Baking soda and vinegar left a greasy coat all over my scalp so I don't use it, but I know that a ton of people have really good results with it. Try a few things out and see what works for you! And loops are a good thing, as Hellodreadhead pointed out. You should see some of the craziness happening at the back of my head right now! I have 1 that looks like a 4 leaf clover.
Yeahh.... Just wash, with whatever you find to work nicely. Just nothing that conditions too much, if at all. Let your hair dry fully and then some, between washes. If you do nothing locks will congo together, and you can choose what ones you want to rip seperate, or allow to grow together, depending on if that's your thing. That's all you need to know, they'll do the rest. Also, locks can feel scratchy, smooth, whatever, depends on your hairtype, method used, and time since beginning. No big deal.
