i'm trying to figure out what evolutionary advantage the glowing has unless the luciferin helps with something else?
I had a log of Pan Stipticus growing in 07 but had to toss it before fruiting. Not only do the fruits glow, but the mycelium glows too. If i still have any spores I'll see if i can get some going on agar and take a pic.
Off the top of my head I would think it has something to do with attracting insects. The glowing will only be visible at night and that is when many insects are active. I bet it has somthing to do with reproduction just like bees and flowers. The insects are attracted to the mushrooms from the glowing, they land on the mushroom and potentially get covered in spores, then the insect flys off spreading the spores as it goes. Of course I am no mycologist so this is my imagination at work. I would love to acquire some of the glowing spores for resale on Spores101.com , if you happen to find them please PM me I would be willing to trade for anything you want that is on the Spores101.com website.
