Who Knew? PATRIOT Act up for Renewal This Month

Now, I'm really not someone who's into politics. Of course, though, I'm against the so many things the government does.

Here's something I found out in an e-mail notification, and it looks like no one's made a post about this, yet. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

I signed it, but I highly doubt congress gives a shit as to what we think.

When it was voted up for renewal for the first time about 5 or 6 years ago, it got fewer votes for approval than it did in 2001 when it was first put into place.

It'll be interesting to see which senators and representatives vote against it this time.

Man, when the Patriot act was a republican thing, the liberals wouldn't stop protesting how horrid the legislation was. Funny how now that the ball is still in their court they've become awful quiet. If Sarah Palin led the change for renewal, these limp-wristed fuckers would be all over it.

They even ignore real pressing issues when Obama decides to go republican and shit like that. Take a look:

...Social Security may be on the White House chopping block, a US Senator recently told Raw Story, expressing deep uneasiness about President Barack Obama's noncommittal attitude toward staving off cuts to the cherished program.

"I have to tell you, I have been on the phone to the very, very, very highest levels of the Obama administration, and the responses that I am getting are not assuring," Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said in an exclusive interview. "What I’m told is that no definitive decisions have been made on the issue of Social Security – I expect that is probably true."

Progressive activists, fearing that the holy grail of American liberalism could fall prey to a bipartisan deal on Capitol Hill, have launched a campaign to pressure the White House and Congress to oppose cuts. And Sanders has stepped up as their champion in the Senate, confirming their concerns based on knowledge drawn from his relative proximity to the president.

"What I’m hearing does not reassure me – that we have a president who is not prepared to defend the heart and soul of what the Democratic Party has been about since Franklin Delano Roosevelt," said Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist.

I signed it too--I never thought much of the Patriot Act, except that it's been a gross pain in the butt since it was passed! I hope it falls flat on its face this time!

WHOA: The House just voted to block the extension of the USA PATRIOT Act. Nobody thought this was possible, but you and more than 55,000 other Demand Progress members signed our petition urging members of Congress to vote against the extension.

The momentum is on our side, but the fight isn't over yet: The House leadership is almost certain to try again to pass the extension, and the Senate is likely to take the bill up next week.

I'm actually surprised it got blocked.

But that doesn't mean it'll come back again and the ones who blocked it could easily change their mind when lobbyists wave some money in their faces.

Tea Party did a good thing

A measure to extend key provisions of the Patriot Act counterterrorism surveillance law through December failed the House Tuesday night, with more than two-dozen Republicans bucking their party to oppose the measure.

The House measure, which was sponsored by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) and required a two-thirds majority for passage, failed on a 277-to-148 vote. Twenty-six Republicans voted with 122 Democrats to oppose the measure, while 67 Democrats voted with 210 Republicans to back it. Ten members did not vote.

The measure would have extended three key provisions of the Patriot Act that are set to expire on Monday, Feb. 28, unless Congress moves to reauthorize them. One of the provisions authorizes the FBI to continue using roving wiretaps on surveillance targets; the second allows the government to access "any tangible items," such as library records, in the course of surveillance; and the third is a "lone wolf" provision of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorist Prevention Act that allows for the surveillance of targets who are not connected to an identified terrorist group.

The vote came as several tea party-aligned members of the new freshman class had been expressing doubts about the measure.

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who highlighted his opposition to the law during his upstart 2010 Senate campaign, signaled Monday that he may vote ultimately vote against an extension when the measure comes up in the Senate, likely later this month.

Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who voted against the measure in 2001, released a statement Monday calling Tuesday's House vote "the tea party's first test."

"The 112th Congress began with a historic reading of the U.S. Constitution," Kucinich said. "Will anyone subscribe to the First and Fourth Amendments tomorrow when the PATRIOT Act is up for a vote? I am hopeful that members of the Tea Party who came to Congress to defend the Constitution will join me in challenging the reauthorization."

I'll give Rand Paul and his likes credit on this, in most regards they're crazy, but at least they stood their ground on this.

The house voted again on the bill using normal rules instead of the 2/3 rule and it passed a simple majority. Guess what new anti-government group also voted in large favor of it
