I know this has probably already been discussed, but I haven't seen mention anywhere on the forums about this particular bill that is being discussed in Congress RIGHT NOW.

    http://rangel.house.gov/2010/07/rangeldraft0716.html

NY Senator Charles B. Rangel's bill calls for a mandatory 2 year service for every citizen and pernament resident, male and female between the ages of 18 and 42. Deferments for education only apply to those completing High School, so a College Education isn't going to necessarily keep you out for a while.

I actually came across this by accident, and I haven't heard it mentioned in the news at all. It kind of freaked me out, since I'm turning 18 in a few months, though I realize it may take a while to get it passed. (if it DOES get passed) It's been introduced and reintroduced in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, and now 2010, which makes me wonder if it's doomed to fail.

How likely do you think it (or something like it) will be passed, how soon, and what are some other thoughts you have on the matter?

I hope the draft doesn't comeback id hate to be forced to fight for anyone. I'd definitely be drafted at the start of any war with the age I am at now.

It sounds like an effort on this one persons part for the war industries. Think how many guns, tanks, planes, MORE GUNS, bullets, GUNS uniforms, vehicles, and everything else would have to be built if the whole US where drafted into the reserves.

It won't happen. Most people are happy to defend america, but there's no reason, even if we where in a just war, to have the whole nation a standing army..... We already have the most powerful, well equipped army in the world, in a number of ways....

If it did happen, there would be massive desertation and AWOL issues, I think most people would say "come get us all, then".

*edit* oh, i read it, you didn't provide a very legit overview... The drafted numbers would be small anyway, not that that makes it ok. It's just this guy bellyaching because most people aren't stupid enough to volunteer for illegal wars fought on false pretenses where they're likely to die for a cause they don't even believe in. Maybe he has a geriatric constituancy?

Such a bill would certainly make one wonder about what exactly is on the horizon...

Not even two weeks ago Harper stated that he has considered a draft bill before and that he is open to the idea. Better not make any promises yet...

Canada doesn't allow military dodgers into their country for asylum anymore, this already played out years ago with some Iraq veteran who went to Canada to try to avoid redeployment on the grounds the Iraqi war was illegal.

    And that was before Harper.

My sense is that they are too smart to enact a draft because that would cause people to actually start waking up... a lesson driven home from the Vietnam era. A passive "draft" where the job situation is so tight that young people are increasingly forced to consider military service as a means of making ends meet. Whether such a situation is deliberately created is subject for debate but I'd wager the last thing congress wants is an activist population

This will not pass because it would mean rich people's kids would have to serve.

Rich kids would never fight alongside poorer kids and politicians would never make rich kids do that.

they would never do it. even if they did, it would end up being for non combat positions. the benefits of an all volunteer force GREATLY outweigh the risks of bringing in people that dont want to be there.

Thats how i see it, but i got out a couple years ago.

Unless I have him confused with someone else, he does this every year, usually in the early Spring.

They were way too slick to bring a draft back simply because they didn't want you youngin's to revolt like happened in the 60s. Instead they took the unsuspecting National Guardsmen and women to fight their wars. They always are thinking way ahead.

Having more troops is not necessarily better.

A smaller, more motivated and better equipped army is a more effective force than one full of people who would rather be doing something else and don't really care.
It wouldn't be in their interest to force everyone through the army or other military bodies.

Rangel is a liberal (very), and he introduces this bill to keep the draft at bay, not cause he wants one. I guess it also puts everyone on the record as being for or against a draft.

And yes, Rangel feels that the Rich should have to serve too, that's why he does this, to prove they don't want their children to serve America as cannon fodder, that's for po' unemployed folk.

Skip,I think he introduces this bill in hopes the draft WOULD come back or threaten to do so and result in what I mentioned above. I think he knows what would happen if it did pass. The streets would fill again with those who would rather not die for the amorphus reasoning the Bush group put forth.I agree that he wants to show who votes one way or the other.
