    well it's been three weeks...
    and it's just a bit...
    interesting.
i have super straight hair and it's thin.
so i learned from this girl on youtube to backcomb and crochet hook (worst mistake of my life) and they came out like this
    [IMG]
(wow, not such a good picture...)

then they came out after i showered, i freaked out (i was so extremely misinformed) and i redid them. and then i kept showering, and now they are completely out in the back and a lot are not even in sections anymore so they look like this:
(not a good picture either, but this was last night)

    (side view)

im a little embarassed to wear them down in public, so i keep them up in a pony tail. but now i have a wool sweater on my pillow and im just letting things do whatever they want.

any advice on what else to do? salt spray?

Enjoy the show. In the next few months your hair will turn into some of the craziest interesting shapes you could think of.

And each time you wake up take a moment to give thanks to the great jah Marley because all you have to do to your hair is shake em around.

    What are you washing with?

It's hard to say. Everyones head is completely different, so what works for one might not work for someone else.

I was using a cinnamon lush bar. Now I just use baking soda. I've enjoyed both.

They look completely normal for 3 weeks.

Feel free to experiment with shampoos and such. It took me about 6 months to find one that works great for my hair and skin type.

You can also get a hairband - for some reason I enjoyed buffs SO MUCH during those early stages, esp. while I was neglecting them. I have always hated hairbands, but then suddenly it changed. I also found that, at least to me, the hair did somehow seem less messy if it was down and I wore a buff, than it looked without a hairband. I loved the look of it and never ever wore it tied back (well, unless I had to - cooking, painting and other sheep).

For some reason now I don't enjoy wearing hairbands again and pretty much use my buffs only when I'm out rock climbing and it's windy.

Oh! and make sure you keep taking pictures of them, it's amazing to look back and see just how much they have changed over time! I'm at the moment obsessed with trying to get some good pics of my dreadies :D

your hair will forever be crazy now, its not really the type of hair thats going to have non crazy days, just less crazy ones, wear them down let them move and you wil grow to love them

^^^This. The first few days I looked like a giant puff ball...but I wore 'em down anyway. And I acted proud of them despite how self-conscience (sp?) I was. It's like someone else said on HF...dreads [especially baby dreads] are the biggest confidence booster ever.

    I disagree.

a half neglected head is the biggest confidence booster ever.

Lookin as good as they can be expected to. Just leave em alone, forget you have em, and look in the mirror in 6 months or so. Then in another 6 months.

Thank you all so much for your support. I'm very self conscious but I guess I will try and wear it down now and than :)
On he bright side, saw three ladies with dreads in the city today. They were so cool :)

I Found The Best Way To Foster Self Confidence And Find A "New Best

Friend" Was To Introduce Yourself To The Town "Hobo"...:).

Every Town Has One, And They Can Usually Be Located In A Public Place, Sitting

On A Bench, With A Bottle In A Brown Paper Bag...:).

Your Going To Have A Lot In Common With This Guy For The First Year,

And If He Takes A Liking To You, Maybe, Just Maybe, He'll Share His Brown

Paper Bag With You As Well As His Hairstyle...[IMG].

Washed my hair today (can now go 3-4 days) and now only 1/3 of my hair is in "dreads." I guess those are the ones I super crocheted. But basically i'm just letting it go. If it wants to dread, it will. This lady at my local organic store knows me as dread girl.

I'll post a month update on Wednesday :)
