i somehow wandered into this "news item": http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/01/07/lunchtime-poll-food-taboos/ at the end there's a poll, i was in time-wasting mode anyways, so made my choice, and was slightly shocked by the results that's with a sample of over 100,000 votes, regardless of the fact that it's kind of an idiotic poll elsewhere i have seen veg numbers from 5% to 20% perhaps cnn viewers are more likely to be carnivores? are there any reliable statistics out there? despite the fact that i am the only veg that i know of in my entire county, i'd always known plenty when i lived in large cities and was under the impression that it was a growing thing . . .
CNN site polls are self-selected samples, and usually disregarded in research. I recall a survey sponsored by Vegetarian Resource Group claiming close to 12 percent in the US.
oops deer and bunnies and such too i always forget about the 4-legged people, probably because they don't make such a nuisance of themselves
I am --except for thanksgiving. So I guess that means I'm not. Gotsta have dead bird once a year with all the trimmins.
My son's been a vegan since he was 14. He's now 30,6' 6" ,225 and works his ass off roofing in our company. No weakness because of his veganism.
2% of the population seems right just going by what I've seen in life. What news site is doing the poll would probably change it though going by audience, MSNBC or NPR would probably have a higher number, while FOX would probably have a lower number.
sounds like someone needs to finance a new survey. Here is the 2003 VRG poll and commentary: http://www.vrg.org/journal/vj2003issue3/vj2003issue3poll.htm
I'm standing up to be counted - oh, that's me as a vegetarian person not my cock! No meat/animal products since 1980 - apart from sperm............ Simon
The location where these surveys are conducted probably influences the results a lot. I'm sure L.A. has a much higher percentage of vegetarians than Dallas. I gave up animal products 20 years ago and I've lived in Charleston West Virginia that entire time and not once have I ran into another vegan or vegetarian here.
well, the cnn poll is online so in theory has little-to-no geographical bias it's cnn, so it may be biased towards persons of below-average intelligence
i'm mostly vegan.. but will eat a small amount of dairy and egg if it is in something.. mostly sweets.. i have a horrible sweet tooth that has a hard time saying no.
I've only personally known about five vegetarians and that was when I lived in a city. Out in small towns I sometimes feel like I'm the only one. Seeing I've transitioned to veganism I feel like I'm much more rare.
I lived in Texas , close to Dallas, when I started my veg journey. I knew a community of hippie sorts and punk sorts who were veg for ethical or political (or contrarian) reasons. I actually personally knew fewer vegheads in Denver/Boulder- local was catching on, as was the pesca-vegan phenom. Which I almost get but then the logic escapes me. I was aware of more people who ate veg meals in CO, but not dedicated to the life sorts. Now in Oakland, it seems pork is huuuge. except at kosher places, which tend to be falafel or meat. It seems there is something of a backlash against the image of vegetarianism. Odd, but understandable. And I wouldn't say that all people who wind up reading cnn.com are lower than average intelligence. News and topis get linked through thousands of sources, and the final destination does not change one's intellect.
