Again, don't let my sig pic influence your opinion: This thread is about the harsh things Joni Mitchell said about Bob Dylan. Is he a fake prophet? A false poet? What in the world brought Joni to such conclusions?

I dunno. I think only releasing his album at Starbucks is a good place to start with. By linking his new album with such a huge, much disliked corporation it may seem a sell out when juxtaposed to some of his counter-culture works. False poet...

On the flip side, most people actually like Starbucks and they're probably less evil than Wal-Mart or Target.

Besides, Bob Dylan hasn't made a protest song since the 70's essentially. Bob Dylan never wanted to be the voice of the anti establishment, he was chosen as monarch for it despite not running for the position. It could be him trying purposely to break that link. He's 67 and is one of the most well known people in music history, he has nothing left to prove, he can do whatever he pleases.

So all of his early works are to be discounted? WTF? His words remain superior to his so-called peers. And I think that's why he is finally being given his just rewards. And lesser talents are foaming at the mouth (IMO). Why would he deliberately go corporate? Unless he is following in the footsteps of the world? What a great surprise. Artists are human. They should never be compared to saints.

Well, I don't think it could be said better than how Madcap put it. And being in the minority on here, is usually being in the majority =P

If people were'nt there in the 60s-70s,they can never get a sense of what his material meant relative to that time period. He was there-he spoke to the upheaval in the country and the changing times--the riots-the civil rights movement-the hypocracy of society ,the restlessness of the young and his voice was authentic. Joanie Mitchell was a bit player and if I'm not mistaken they had a fling back in the day. Maybe sour grapes? This is NOT the 60s. That was long ago and far away. Why she would bother to make that kind of remark is beyond me. Don't mean shit.

Is there an actual link or something to what she had said or her attitude towards Bob? I get the feeling that we're missing the context and grasping to fill in the possibilities. We can wonder and why and guess, but the only person who can explain what was meant is Joni.

Joni included. Selling out or verbal diarrhea, it's all just regular human foibling.

They both produce great music and I think that's probably the part that matters most.

Wise words. :sunny: There are too many links to read - simply Google Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan: That's more than enough to tell the story true. :)

They're both poets but Dylan is also a court jester, grifter and magician.

On the other hand, Joni can sing a lick.

Joni sounds jealous. She should be out of menopause by now but could be it's hanging around and she's starting to get batshit crazy.

I actually like both artists. I do think that it is a reference that she should of not made but to be fair she is not the first to do so nor the last.

Back in about 65 when he went electric there was genuine outrage from the folk scene, he was heckled at concerts for not staying acoustic and folk. Thankfully it did not hinder his career for long. ;)

It is very difficult to expect that any artist in a music span of more than 40 years is not going to change or experiment in different styles. I think it is wrong as a fan base to expect that but we do. We want the old hits but I am sure for most artists that is a point of stagnation after a period of time.

Instead, as with any artist, it should simply come down to either liking them or not.

Lay lady lay, is my favourite of his, I can remember hearing it and thinking if he can sing like this what was he thinking of doing some of the other vocals. :)

This is the only clip that is actually him singing it that I could find.

Of hers, this would be my favourite. :)

Are you serious about not knowing who Joni Mitchell is? She felt she was the female counter part to Dylan. She is just mad cause Joan Baez was called the Mother of the American Folk rock scene as Dylan was the Father.

Though I always felt Joan's British counter-part, Jacqui McShee has a far more beautiful voice than either her or Joni.

The Times wrote: "She tackles accompanied and unaccompanied folk songs, spirituals, blues, and a variety of songs in other styles." In fact, Jacqui's beautiful crystal-clear vocals set the standard for female British folk and folk-rock singers.

Her band Pentangle were one of the leaders of the early British Folk Rock scene.

Personally I have always seen Dylan as a true Musician and Mitchell as a Artist. Musicians love to share their craft and accept critisism. Artist are snobs and think the world evolves around them. Mitchell proved that when she claims there are no modern great Poets in the music scene. She is obviously out of touch with the music scene she came from.

Oh! Here is a Joni Mitchell video:

Here is a Jacqui McShee video:

Check out other Pentangle videos. I think this woman had the most beautiful voice in the 60's Folk Rock scene. I have every single album from them (I have every Dylan, Mitchell & Baez album as well)

Here is a Joan Baez video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFvkhzkS4bw&feature=related

And just cause I feel she should be added to this group I'm also adding Sandy Denny in this group of songtress's. I have every single Fairport Convention album and I have to agree with my friend Michael that Sandy Denny was their best singer ever. I'm torn between her and Jacqui. Sandy has been described by Allmusic's Richie Unterberger as "the pre-eminent British Folk Rock singer".

Here is one of Sandy Denny's Videos:

Ignore their egos and just enjoy their music! :2thumbsup:

Oh and incase you still not sure who Sandy Denny is?
She is also noted for her duet with Robert Plant on the song "The Battle of Evermore" from Led Zeppelin's fourth album released in 1971. She remains to this day the only guest vocalist on a Led Zeppelin album.

Once you've reached 20 (I think) posts, you'll be able to paste the YouTube URL and have it magically turn into a video clip.
