Hey I know the fda says you shouldnt take more than 4000 mg of tylenol in a day but I was wondering if that was just trying to be on the extreme safe side. Ive heard people say theyve taken way more than that and are fine. I take tylenol because it is mixed with vicodin quite often, and sometimes all I can get is the big 750s. Just wondering what is safe in your opinions? thanks.
4000mg for a person moving around, eating, drinking plenty of water, juice/ NO ALCOHOL/ will be fine .. still to much.. A regular every pain use of Tylenol shouldnt be more than 2000mg .. Better yet, you should be fine 12hr with 1000mg followed by 1000mg the next 12hr period and so on.. a person like myself is a Tylenol abuser.: my everyday pain should be 1000mg but I would push 6000mg in a 12period before moving to Narcotic relief for pain .. this is when you take plain Oxycontin due to the fact you are already overloaded in Tylenol/ Acetaminophen .. My current intake today of tylenol is 1000mg.. taking a few 750mg of APAP every few hours will accumulate but still not be in a danger zone..
No, 4 grams per day is not the "extreme safe side" in fact there was talk recently about reducing the upper threshold to no more than 650 mg in a single dose, which would be no more than 2.6 grams per day. But that hasn't been implemented. Taking the maximum daily amount of APAP for a few weeks is known to cause some degree of (reversible) liver damage, as evidenced by transaminase elevation. How much of it you can take really varies among people. Some may be able to take doses of 7 grams or more of APAP while for others this may cause liver failure. Idiosyncratic reactions can even occur at recommended dosages, though this is quite rare. But the thing with acetaminophen is that the dose doesn't have to be too much higher than the recommended daily dose for this to become a real possibility.
I would not recommend that at all. Tylenol can cause liver damage and even liver failure when used in high amounts. About 500 people die every year from this. 1000mgs is fine. 4000mgs is pushing it, considering the OP might be ingesting that much tylenol for recreational purposes, it seems stupid. Go read a book or smoke a joint or something.
I wouldnt recommend anyone taking 6, 1000mg extended relief Tylenol but its been done with no complications. Its when you mix other drugs and Alcohol with them , the liver can not break them down when breaking down alcohol, or when coupled with Opiates < the liver is working over time and other body functions are reduced while under the influence of narcotic... .. Tylenol is though available OTC without a prescription , theoretically you can take as many as you want if you die, you die.. dont smoke a joint though, you will go to jail ..
the 7500 mg has been over a 15 hour period think I should be alright or should I go to the hospital or something ive heard you could be symptom free for 24 hours
I would. It would probably be best to get your stomach pumped. Symptoms aren't always present, especially when it comes to maladies of the liver, it doesn't have very many nerve endings, so you won't feel pain really.
i took up to 13 x 500 mg.. thats 6500 mg all in one shot.. plus alcohol. didnt get sick, but i dont do that no more.
hey thx for all your input, I am fine not sick in the least, and yes the 750s were over a 15 hour period.
damn man.. that is a lot of apap. Maybe you should go get liver enzyme tests or something. You wouldn't know at all because no symptoms would occur until it's too late from what Ive read..
i know people that have taken such ungodly amounts of APAP that i'm SURPRISED they're still alive... it's not likely to kill you, but it's extremely unhealthy.
Tylenol overdose can take a week or even more to kill you. Don't assume that everything's fine even if you don't feel bad right now. I recommend going to the hospital.
