Canada aint all its cranked up to be....fre helath care si free for those who cant aford, great. When i lived there and made $8/hour out of high school (-25% to taxes and services =$6) i still got a $50 a month bill (in BC). Canada is a VERY expensive country to live in. I lve it as a land amss and environment, its great. But VERY expensive and VERY arrogant as far as peopel go. Every year i go back, its worse. peopel are more ignorant, more arrogant and as impossible as it seems more lazy. very gerneal, which i try not to do, but canad has gone for shit lately. It has had a lot of cash flow lately and real bad governance. At least where i a from, coastal BC, there is a real "better than though" attitude. good to be patriotic, but when you become hypocritical and turn a blind eye to your own "families" shit, it's not good. recent examples. here isa very recent one. the g7, or g8?, summit in toronto, they actually took our charter of rights aways for this. Go to the govs website and look up the charter of rights, then look what they did to its own citizens all ebcause they choose to host leaders of unliked nations in a BUSY city where they know there will be unhappy people. canada is like this. everything has onyl 2 choices. you can: A) go somewhere less populated, sell fewer trees processed for the same amount as unprocessed large amaounts, tax less and be just a little intelligent with how you manage money. OR B) put very controversial mettings in the downtown core of one of the biggest cities, sell all natural resources for teh cheapest, easiest buyer (IE the states cause you can just truck it right donw while being financially raped), tax the population incredibly high, stpidly high amounts, and still not give much better than other places in the world. Canadians tend to go for option B. As a people in general, and i know many are not this way, we go fo rthe easier and safer route. we dont liek stress and we want to be "protected" i see this more everytime i return. same as the states adn australia, we are turning a blind eye to teh gov in return for false comfort. they give use ***more*** lemiant cannabis laws than the ***USA***. we have cheap****ER**** health care than teh ****USA**** no where does this transalte to we have a good system. Most of Europe ahs a better system (health). Schools in canada are a joke, the uni's at least have some sort of ok payment options. jsut cause we onyl get fined, which is really allthe gov wants is more $, for a joint, does not make us progressive. With eladers liek the current "canada douche" (harper) we are doomed to failure. Short term gain, long term pain. This is the law of the States, adn this is the law of canada even moreso. the biggest difference is our neighbour is the big bully, so we dont have to be. We jsut rape our own peopel and make them believe its for the better....in that respect the can gov is far better than teh US at manipulation. for proof, ask a canadian what they think about what im saying, and i bet 9 out of 10 think i am "uncanadian" or ahte canada....its sad. I showed a new article that was talking about our stripped rights at teh G8 situation this year, and my own sister and mother thought i had become so jaded lately...i never even said antyhing, just posted a link on facebook. It was at that point i realized just how foggy us canadians as a nation really are. At elast in teh states tehre are a few, very few, with enough guts to stand up to teh wrongs of our government (who are suppsed to serve us, not guide us). I dont personally think much of that original quote, he seems a bit disgruntled, but canada is for sure in for some real hurt if we dont wake the fuck up and stop pointing our fingers south saying "We're better than them". I hate to say it, but there be 4 fingers pointing back at ya bro.
I understand the G8 controversy, but frankly, you can become indoctrinated in hippy BS just as bad as you can be by the government, and that is what has happened concerning the G8 indecent, it is easy and very "hippy like" to say the police went to far, which is true, but that does not excuse peoples civil responsibilities either, yes there was peaceful protesting, too bad a few dumb shits decided to go and break the rules, the people complaining about how their non-violent protest was stopped and how innocent people go arrested obviously could not be everywhere to know what was actually going on, if the protest becomes violent anywhere, the police to what we pay them to do, keep the population safe. I get a lot of shit from my friends for saying this, as they are completely on the anti-government side of this debate. While things did get to far, what would you do as a leader of a country hosting the worlds most powerful and politically important people? I do not agree with suspending rights do not get me wrong, but I can say with dedication that if I was a countries leader, I would have up'ed security and set strict no tolerance for violence rules. Peaceful protests are great, but you get one chance, if you mess it up, you cant say "ooh ok Mr. Policeman, ill be peaceful this time for sure". Yet people still complain that the many truly non-violent protests got broken up. How about this, instead of blaming the government for everything that went wrong, protest the black bloc antics that caused the police to shut down the protest. Police are a reactionary force, when people are setting cars on fire and breaking into banks and stores, the police have a responsibility to stop them. Its just to bad the protesters would rather blame the effect rather then the actual cause. Sorry for this rant, I have heard countless G8 debates and quite frankly think its all over-hyper crap from people who do not know how to look at anything from more then their own view, its easier to just blame those in power. If you don't like your government, become a politician and change it. If that doesnt work and nobody cares, your going to have to realize your a minority opinion, and that the majority of people dont share your "blame the government" mentality. @ Kada, I dont think you are "unCanadian" or hate Canada, but I do think that you are using a very one sided view, that easy to see since your only examples of how Canada works is from were you come from (British Columbia and surprise surprise your example of Canada is tree harvesting), you cant judge the countries arrogance and ignorance based on once place. Mostly people just seem to be waking up to the idea that Canada is not perfect (as I made a point of earlier this thread), and then demonize Canada for it. Not happy? Move somewhere "better" then, im not going to try to convince you this is the best place to live, because its not. But I would much rather live here then most other places in the world. Sorry to keep ranting in this thread, ill try to stop
i understand you exactly. the G* comment is because someone asked for recent examples. Am i upset the police arrested people, honestly a little yes. but i agree with you. I think the thing that aggravates em most about the situation is our government changed our law, and didn't inform us. The issue, at least for me is not about the cops arresting people, its about our charter of rights being abused and us not even told abou tit. that is what gets me mad about the situation with that. My examples are from wher ei am from, because thats what i know more of, so no surprise there. Though there are many issues everywhere in teh world. Alberta has all kind sof environmental issues. All together, i love canada. I think it is a great place. What i dont much liek is how much better peopel think it is than other places. Cause frankly its not. I did move somewhere "better" because i didnt like things at teh time. BUt i will be moving back shortly, canada is amazing, there are jsut too many not thought out plans that end up being policy. i cant own land in canada, no one can. i bought my land and house, but its only a title. thats a whole other debate. But we own rights to land. take it or leave it, i took it. What can go wrong here is that we are now stuck with federal, provincial and municipal/regional laws that dictate what we can do...my house is in the "country", and even there they tell you how high your fence, and all sorts of silly bylaws...some places, especially in cities, teh rules have gotten so silly they tell you how many cars you an have, what colour you can paint, what kind of plants you can garden. my fathers old house, in outskirts of Victoria, had a visit from the CRD (local gov dudes) telling him to cut his weeds. i had planted wildflowers nad bulbs all through his lawn to have flowers instead of grass. they came, said mow it or they will and they will mail a bill. canada is great. the land is the best part, but the peopel are not free and i dont see the point in thinking we ar so much more free than places like the states, when we really are not. I always hear canadians bragging about their health care. sure its better than down south, but still REALLY lame! admitedly some areas seem to eb better. BC is horrible, adn though i travel a lot i have never had experience with health care in other provinces. but waiting 6 months for a cat scan, a year for laser eye surgery etc etc. its just sad. And i personally beleive we are doing it to ourselves. Throughout my travels around the globe, i find many countries that are not so damn greedy and accept lower pay but everyone works a far better system. Here in Taiwan we dont wait for any kind of medical at all, i want a catscan, make an appointment for this week. I had dental correction on my teeth within 3 days and cost me $9 cdn, which was over $800 in canada. I pay an annual fee of $120(ish) for health care here, as a non citizen, wereas in canada i paid $50/month and the service was half as good, always had to wait. perscriptions are also cheaper. I'm not saying Canada is bad, not at all. We have a pretty decent way of life. But i find we as a nation are pretty ignorant to th true outside world and are perhaps mor unwilling to change than even our neighbours to the south. If we didnt pay everyone so damn much money for relatively little work and high taxes etc etc, we could really get somewhere. I jsut cant see a country so rich in both human diversity, and natural diversity (and resources) to be anything but incredibly rich and prosperous, but i dont find that to be the case there. That said, i am moving back, every country has its issues, as does taiwan which is why i plan to move back. Guess we need to choose the lesser eveil and instead of accept it, voice ourselves, and actually put some realism in our words and act on our bitching Another thing i find canadians totally lacking, a spine. We just dont stand up for what we believe in when it comes to government policy. I am not anti governemnt, only pro equality and against decisions based on personal greed.
forgot to add about what we would do if it were us. lets face it, any G8/G20 type meeting is going to draw protests, right? we all realize and our leaders are not so blind to not realize that. so if you are going to house a bunch of foreign nationals and cause a lot of protests, why in the hell do it in the middle of one of your biggest cities? it makes zero sense, unless they are trying to look cool in front of their buddies and stroke each others egos. why not hold it in the rockies somewhere in one of their massive mansions, cant cost more than it does downtown wth all the damage done and police etc. protestors are not goign to fly out htere to protest...does this not seem logical? its such a simple easy fix, that would cure all the issues of this protest prolem and our charter of rights...but that is not the canadian way. our gov seems to consistently try and do it the most hard headed and expensive way physicially possible. On a possitive note, i hope i dont seem negative Cambell, aka BC Douche, is steppign down...sometime. So theres a plus. Lets welcome a newguy so we can vote him out later for an evern worse one just to get rid of that one lol.
I am glad I didnt seem to offend you, as it was completely not my purpose, as you seem to have a solid grasp on things. I suppose it is often just a matter of experience too, as you have examples of times when you did not get the treatment you expected health care wise, in having to wait a long time and such. I have never had a problem, which is why I often defend health care, but I recognize its shortcomings for sure.
You were living in BC. That's your financial problem. XD But anyways... If anyone thinks Canada (or any country) can be perfect or even represent the majority...I think they need to snap out of it. Still proud to be a Canadian. Also, I have never been discriminated against by the government (that I know of) for being Metis or Pagan, or any other minority I happen to fall into. Lots of individuals discriminating though. Lots of Natives and Pagans feel differently. I don't know. It's nice up here XD
