My cousin is using marijuana to cope with depression since he is going through a stressful time. I neither advocate nor condemn its use, personally I don't use marijuana or any other recreational drugs. I was wondering if there is any scientific evidence that suggests it helps with depression since I am worried about the side effects of marijuana on my cousin since he has become more withdrawn and unmotivated.

It all depends how you use it. I find it helps me for lots of things, when I can get it that is. The fascists that rule my country wont let people make their own decision on it.

Works for me relative to motorcycle knees, busted spinal disc and for providing interesting vignettes that belong in the movies. I'm not depressed,so I don't know about that.

I get depressed when I can't score any weed, but that is also usually because when I can't score any weed it's like for months at a time, because the people who run my country are a bunch of moronic, hypocritical, two-faced depressing cunts.

It can be uplifting and very helpful, in small doses. But if they smoke even as much as the average pothead in a session, it will not help things, making you introverted and unmotovated is what it does unless you force yourself to take the effects and run with it, which takes practice.

A hit is good for depression, a few bowls is NOT.

A healthy lifestyle is the key to beating depression, eating, sleeping, exercising, breathing... cannabis helps to facilitate these things in a positive way. It doesn't make much difference how much you smoke, so long as what you are smoking is goed qualitiet.

Self medication for depression rarely works out well, no matter what medicine is being self-prescribed/administered/monitored.

A friend of mine got his medical cannabis card to treat depression. RooRshack is right in saying that it's effective in a small dose and becomes negative in higher doses.

At a low dose, it uplifts your mood and makes you lucid.

Its a "quick fix" and just supresses the depression for a while....then it comes back and the cycle begins again....

It's fuck all of the kind a quick fix. Like I say if you use it correctly it's a long term fix.

Please donot liken the herb to a pharmaceutical allopath.

ummm...I can and I will. If you have to keep using ANYTHING long term......its a supressent...not a cure.

Is a cure not better than a crutch?

    As a naturopath...qualified...and a smoker...I do know what I'm talking about.:)

You can wave all the certificates you want at me,

    It is not a crutch.

I have to maintain a steady supply of oxygen to my blood through breathing air all the time, and I need to keep drinking water to survive. Are they also crutches?

Take your head of your text book and listen to what your inner mind is telling you.

I wasn't being rude, I was asserting my argument.

I speak from my own experience of it, which is my entitlement.

I would not recommend it, and this comes from experience.

Don't try and fix your depression with weed, or any substance. Depressed people should stay away from weed since they are likely to become psychologically addicted. Same with to much video games, TV, junk food, and all that shit. Get the guy a bicycle. If he lives near the ocean get him surfing, as surfing saved my life. I was a suicidal whreck most of my life, till I started surfing. Smoking a little weed now and then if fine, but it shouldn't be used to treat depression. BUT, don't tell him this, he won't listen. Rather get him out and active, the rest will follow. Depressed people suffer from boredom more than anything else, (don't tell him this either.) and it can drive a person totally crazy. Get him a passion in life, and happiness will follow. (Unless there is no waves for a week, then I feel like I want to kill myself again, lol.)

Weed is wonderful, and can help you through some stressful times, but for a persistent depression and not just a case of the blues, a lifestyle change is necessary.

Well, get your head out of the bong and see that your in a vicious cycle...you take it for depression, you feel better until the high wears off...you get depressed again (you even said it depresses you when you cant get it) smoke it again....

Explain to me how that is a long term fix?

    Its definitely not a cure

and I am not judging...as I said..I smoke daily...but I am under no illusions that its a cure for depression:)

Dude, I understand why you think it helps for depression, and it certainly does help for stresses and some serious cases of the blues, but if you have real depression (and most people who think they are depressed don't) then weed, anti-depressants, and other stuff people use to escape their emotions, won't work.

I also think you do not know what true depression is like.
True depression is when you have no hope. When the concept of happiness sounds like some stupid fairy tale, and that as far as you can remember, you have always been like that. It is when your very soul is ripped from your body and you wish that you don't exist. It is when you wake up into hell, every, single, day. When you cry yourself to sleep, wishing that you will never wake up. It is when you are BEGGING God to take your life. It is when you start to think that even hell cannot be worse than what you are experiencing right now in this very moment. It is when you want to take your life, but you do not have the willpower to do so, and you just wish that you can be taken in your sleep, so that you don't have to go through the effort of actually killing yourself.

There is only one way out of this cycle, and that is to spend an extended period in nature. And I mean raw, powerful nature, not a walk in the local forest trail once in a while. You have to face the power of nature. Surfing did that for me, since when you are out there in a stormy sea, just trying to survive, with wave after wave pounding you, thinking you are going to drown, and then actually catching a monster wave, it touches that which is the very essence of our being.

There's different cures man, there's no one answer for everyone.

Weed can get people through, for sure.

Recreational marijuana use for depresion is only escape. Marijuana for this particular ailment must be smoked or used VERY sparingly. But that can help greatly, or at least get someone to the point where they CAN go surf, or do whatever it is they need to do. But OP's friend is using it very unwisely and will only make depression worse in the end.
