I tried some once, although it may have been the kind lacking wormwood or having a really low percentage of it. It tasted nasty and was just a really drunken state, not hallucinogenic like Its built up to be.

It tastes nice for a couple drinks, then you get tired of drinking licorice (at least for that drinking session).

It mostly gets you super drunk, it's very high proof, and when you prepare it properly it's still quite strong. It's not going to make you see shit till you're basically braindamaged from the wormwood, as I understand it, and while it's got mildly psychoactive stuff in it, I think it's basically like spice... it doesn't matter what they spray JWH on, because it's fucking JWH. It's a nice, unique drunkenness, but it's not a drug of it's own or anything. And if you make your own, be careful, you could make it pretty poisonous... We just got prohibition on it repealed, we don't need it back because the current rage is kids poisoning themselves with pure wormwood absinthe :p

It's like Sambuca x 1000. The flavor is extremely intense. It has a weird mouthfeel, too as if it's almost thick or creamy but still watery... hard to explain. The "black licorice" type flavor kind of numbs your mouth and throat a bit too, unlike any other kind of alcohol which is a weird sensation.

I've only ever drank La Fee, which is considered "genuine" as it at least contains real wormwood, but it's far from a top shelf Absinthe. It's a neon green color which indicates it has artificial coloring in it, whereas top quality Absinthe should be more of a drab green color.

I have never been able to get more than a slight buzz off it because I can't get past the 2nd glass before the flavor/texture starts getting to me. Never tried shooting it because I'm pretty sure it would come directly back up and it just seems to defeat the purpose of drinking Absinthe in the first place.

All in all, I enjoy drinking it once in a while for the novelty and I wouldn't be opposed to trying a few more brands, but it doesn't make you hallucinate or any of the hype you hear in general. It just gives a different kind of buzz, maybe a little more clear-headed, and you won't even feel it until you go to stand up. I'm sure I would enjoy it more if I could get more of it down the gullet but I'm still working on that.

That being said, OP I would try it first to make sure you like it before going through the investment of making your own. It's expensive, time consuming, and easy to fuck up (i.e. make a poisonous batch) if you don't know what you're doing.

I Liked it. a little bitter, but good, and it gets you drunk super fast. I wouldnt drink it that often though, just an once a year treat for me. Also like to add, you have to get the good stuff, that isnt bright green, more dull like sweet was saying. and making your own was disastrous at first, but you get to realize what works and what doesnt. Making your own is risky though.

I think you're trying to drink it too fast, it's not a party drink or something to shoot, or you'll have a bad time. It's more of a "sit and philosophise with your fellow alcoholic bohemians for hours on end" type of drink. And then, everything's supposted to look like your signature, before you pass out in the gutter out front of the absinthe house :2thumbsup:

Nah, I'm talking spending about 1/2 hour on a glass (1 shot's worth - prepared)... sip... brace myself... sip... hold back the gag reflex... sip... take a breath... lol can't seem to get past the 2nd glass. Like I said, I've never tried to shoot it because I feel it defeats the purpose. Half the appeal of Absinthe is in the preparation with the fancy slatted spoon, ice water and sugar cubes, or the fire if you happen to be drinking Bohemian.

La Fee may just not be the brand for me. I'll try a different kind next time. Pernod is supposed to be legit.

Heh, my tastebud sensitivity goes down the more drunk I am that's for sure, I've often found myself shooting 151 back to back after I'm already buzzed lol but I'd really like to experience an unadulterated Absinthe buzz/drunk sometime. I just have to man up and get it down. Like I said before, maybe La Fee just ain't my shit... it's the mouthfeel moreso than the flavor that gets me. That weird tingly/numbing effect on the mouth and throat, gives me the willies just thinking about it. However, I'll almost certainly be drinking the last 2 fingers of my La Fee this Friday evening...

You all should read this article on Absinthe:

I've had it a number of times and there is great variation in the quality of the drink and the amount of wormwood in it.

I've had excellent Spanish and Czech absinthe that were stronger with wormwood, but really it's the alcohol that does the trick. At around 140 proof, the shit kicks ass.

I don't recommend getting real drunk on it cause you'll regret it later. You are pretty well fogged up the next day. Takes a few days to get back to normal.

You're not gonna hallucinate on absinthe, but you might talk a lot!

It's not as hallucinogenic as people seem to think. It just gets you really drunk, even the absinth with the actual hallucinogenic substance. Perhaps if you would make it yourself and put a lot more thujone (wormwood) in it, it would be more like the stuff Monet and van Gogh indulged in and actually makes it earn the title green fairy again.
Legally produced absinthe does have such a low percentage of that stuff in it that it's as good as impossible to notice the effects of it before you're too drunk to notice anything.
