Do you believe that homosexuals and bisexuals are born that way and it is in their genes, or that it's a life choice and they choose to be homosexual or bisexual? I believe that homosexuals/bisexuals choose to be gay/lesbian/bi. Currently no scientific evidence supports that homosexuals are born homosexual.

I believe it's a combination of both genetics and environment.

Just like our personalities (or lack thereof)

Uhh I believe you can turn AND be born that way. I'm pretty sure they've already found the gay gene and there is talk of being able to isolate it to make sure the baby isn't born with a bigger chance of being gay

Yep Glen I agree. I won't lock this just yet but I would encourage the original poster to do some looking before posting. This topic bores the Bejeezus outta me since there are no definitive answers yet. If this turns into a pissing contest it's toast.

We are born with our predilections - everyone has a different make-up both genetically and also hormononly. Hence gay, bi, hetero, transgendered etc.

I believe that we all have tendencies to be bisexual - after all if we love the human body what's wrong with loving both sexes - it's natural to me. Society conditions us to fit into labels and the sooner we stop trying to stereotype ourselves sexually the happier and freer we'll all be.

Vive la difference and enjoy both! :sunny:

    ps - I'd betta hav a look at Jo King's pics :)

Seeing as who you're attracted to is not a choice, then I think why some people are homosexual is at least far more to do with nature than it has to do with envoirenment. When you're attracted to someone, you're not going "oh, I think I'll make myself be attracted to this person", its a completely natural and instinctual thing. You can certainly choose who you're intimate with. Like gay men who are in the closet can still go out with women to try and cover up their real sexuality. But that doesnt mean that they are attracted to women. I am straight, but I didnt choose to be, I just am.

Some people did, and still do think, that transsexuals choose to be the way they are. Yet, there is strong scientific evidence that shows its highly likely, that at least some of them are born with gender in brain structure, of the opposite sex. Gene research is very much in its infancy, so just because no definitive biological cause of homosexuality has been found yet, does not mean that there isnt one. Common sense and logic tells me that gay people do not choose to be gay. Seeing as that is the case, it is highly likely that people are either born gay, or are born with a strong pre-disposition to be gay.

Many people have tried to use the envoirnment/upbringing arguement for the existence of transsexuals, yet all of the evidence points to that being a total falsehood. And Ive yet to hear a single nurture arguement for why people become homosexual that is in any way plausible, or that cant be easily torn apart with facts and plain common sense.

Some people see 'choice' as having moral implications.

When it comes to having same-sex attraction or falling in love with another consenting adult - It really doesn't matter whether you choose it or not.
Morality has nothing to do with it.

So the question, apart from perhaps providing some scientific insights, really isn't that important.

    Everyone look at your hand.
Digit ratio could be an indicator of hormone exposure in the womb.
Most heterosexual males have a shorter index finder than ring finger, this isn't always the case though. Sexuality is so complicated

Im definitely not one who would see "choice" as having any moral (or immoral) implications. Even if being gay was a choice, Id still find nothing wrong with it, or gay people.

You cant really choose who you're attracted to, and to that end, I think being gay is no more a "choice" than being attracted to the opposite sex is for straight people.

    btw OP.
That is a flimsy statement, so flimsy I would call it a lie.

A lot of studies have been done, did you even read the Wikipedia page?.

There IS evidence to suggest that being gay is genetic,
We may not have found the gene itself, but we have observed phenomena that points to its existence.

I believe that your sexuality is genetic. I think that environment can suppress it.

Who wakes up one day and thinks, 'i'm going to be gay'? That is not meant to condesend and though most are happy with their sexuality, the idea that such a difficult circumstance can be simply chosen is silly.

If that's true, then all these macho tough guys who bash 'queers', they are all just as gay too but have simple chosen not to partake with others of the same sex. We are all as gay, bi, strait as each other, unless of course, science does have a part to play.
