I went there on a road trip with a couple of friends two summers ago. There is a nice (but buggy) camping area about 2 miles out of town between lake placid and saranac lake, I forget what it's called, though. Stuff to do...The Whiteface ski resort has downhill mountain biking during the summer, which is frickin' awesome. If you're going to do that though, make sure to find out where the woods trails are, 'cause the main trails suck. The olympic ski jump is pretty cool - you can go up in the tower...there's also the bobsled course. I'll bet whiteface would make a hell of a hike, if you're up for it. The gondola at the top could take you back down, and there's an amazing view from there. There's also some cavern or something around there. We didn't do that because we were getting all the other stuff free from some community weekend pass we got by mistake, so we weren't up for paying to do that.
