The Dems have finally managed to get something out of the lame duck congress Passing the ever dreaded cloture vote, the repeal of don't ask don't tell managed to break the filibuster by passing 63-33. This now means that the bill can proceed to a simple up/down vote where it can pass with a simple majority, and given the rules of the senate the vote needs to take place by sometime tomorrow evening now that cloture has been invoked, though there's a good chance it can happen by tonight. 2 Democrats, Joe Manchin from West Virginia voted against cloture(I'm not sure who the 2nd one was, if you know please post it), but 6 Republicans from more liberal states broke party ranks and voted for it, Olympia Snow, Susan Collins, Scott Brown, Lisa Murkowski, Joe Voinivich and Mark Kirk(Also known as the GOP members who are not total assholes, Richard Lugar has also indicated he might vote yes on the final up/down vote) As this is the exact bill passed by the house, once it passes the senate in its final vote, it will go to Obama to sign. It won't be implemented immediately but should be fully implement within a years time sources are saying. Finally something that began almost 18 years ago is finally over. Meanwhile Sen. McCain continues to rally against it calling today "A very sad day" missing the irony in the fact the last famous Republican senator from Arizona, Barry Goldwater once in regards to this issue summed it up in "You don't need to be straight to shoot straight" http://www.npr.org/2010/12/18/132164172/-dont-ask-dont-tell-clears-vital-hurdle http://voices.washingtonpost.com/federal-eye/2010/12/senate_poised_to_end_dont_ask.html
Yea, yea, caught a little bit at the end of the vote. But haha Fran Lebowitz is right, the gays are just fighting for the right to be legally enslaved, it doesn't make sense. They're fighting for the right to marry, and join the military.
They are just mad cause the DI's will not be able to say the old adage "do you suck dicks, I bet you can suck a golf ball thru a garden hose".. I guess they will have to use their imagination a little better on the SOC...
It's actually nice to see progress in this country instead of more political bullshit. And this definitely wouldn't of happened if John McCain were President.
Theres always been plenty of gay people in the military. This is more about everyone elses sensibilities
I had a really long copy paste post somewhere, that said Gays are better at leadership positions than hetros'... While I may not be gay, Im Gay at heart, never really hid the fact I was transgendered person while in the army, but I wasnt very open about it either. I was excellent in the art of military camouflage, of course I can put on make up and blend in... Very light on my feet, additionally I excelled thru courses that would make a larger soldier stumble. I can balance well, and go into small holes that other large men can not. I can climb faster, run faster, dodge bullets faster. Im much more open minded and while I may not be as social in civilian life. My rank in the army was an E6. eqv to a Staff Sargent and Im a BITCH and can scream very very loud...You wouldnt want to get on my screw up list.. :2thumbsup: I suppose someone with a complex wouldnt feel very happy that a blooming faggot was ripping them a new asshole.. And while I cant speak for all branches of service. I can tell you the comradeship in the 407th bsb was pretty fricking leg humping gay.. its how we looked out for each other, its how we become close brother and sisters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVNaz3mZFg0"]YouTube - Bored Soldiers Having Fun in Iraq some Lulz... looks like a lot of Gay(fun)activity to me..
This is a landmark day for civil rights in the US. On paper, "don't ask, don't tell" was better than nothing, but it still allowed gay people to be drummed out of the service if they were accidently outed. At least now the military has been dragged into the 21st century. John McCain is very good at missing irony. He has billboards all over Arizona saying that he'll "protect Arizona's military bases", even as his Republican cohorts complain about wasteful government spending. It's only "wasteful" if it's someone else's congressional district.
That's the point. Other people's "sensitivities" aren't nearly as important as allowing people to be who they really are. It's about freedom and equality. What I don't understand is how is it different from women serving in the military? Aren't the male soldiers being "distracted" by the females serving alongside them? If not, then why should it be any different knowing that the man serving alongside you is gay? Whomever the other person has sex with is not really anyone else's business. Time for a "sensibilities" check for people. If ppl are that sensitive, it's their problem and they need to deal with it. Counseling is suggested to uncover the reasons for their prejudice/hate of gays.
I haven't been paying much attention to the actions on this bill, but I hope it will pass. It's ridiculous that someone can be given "the boot" from boot camp simply because of their sexual orientation. It's wrong on so many levels. I mean, so if someone's in the army and they swing that way but no one knows about it... they're committing a crime beneath their noses... comparatively treason. It's outrageous! Give the people/soldiers their freedom back.
More importantly it dishonours the thousands of gay personnel that died in WW2, Korea, Vietnam, other conflicts and those risking their lives today. DADT gives the impression there are only a tiny amount of gay service people which is so not the case And the flip side to this is if/when repealed some will still stay in the closet because they want their main identity to be simply veteran, war hero as opposed to the gay war hero, Be seen to get special treatment or defacto affirmative action. Concern is for positive discrimination as well as negative
It goes beyond just that. The most common of stereotypes regarding homosexuality is that it also comes along with being flaming and somehow less able to protect oneself (or others). I think at the heart of it, that could be why people like Mccain are so resistant... He always had the ability to think... "I'm not gay, look at my military record"... Now, he (and those like him) may have to really examine why it is that they like showering with other guys so much...
