Carlin - if we left nature alone we wouldn't be burning oil in the first place. Good luck with that.

according to engineers at mit we can abandon fossil fuels if all of us set aside 8 hours a day to crush the oil out of palm nut seeds

Nice of you to wish us all well, but you're a little late.....

See, oil wouldn't be needed if we didn't create a need for it in the first place.

    Why mmmmmmmmmmmm?

Just a bit of a leap is all.

Do you know any other chemical that could have been used to fuel the internal combustion engine and therefore cheap travel?

No but normally when I say we should stop using oil I also say that we should learn to live off of what's within walking distance

Do you know of any other mode of transportation that didn't require dirty fuel, labour, maintenance? Cheap has nothing to do with it. Gas/oil always has been and always will be more expensive than the alternative.

That's fine if you are also against globalisation and very little trade in your own country.
I'm not sure where the world would be with out either of them.
I think it was inevitable we needed oil.
It was a substance to exploit for our needs.
    Maybe not your needs..

Plenty. But none that is so fast. Not just cars but boats and other transport with an internal combustion engine.

I'd like to know about that.

That's exactly it. Everybody wants fast, they want everything right now. This is the problem with human beings.

What, alternative fuel? Look into hemp. Though you might cast it off as witchery or some such thing.

Granted an engine can now go at 250 plus miles an hour but once upon a time it went 20 miles an hour a 10 fold increase in the speed of getting food and other tradeable goods around the country/world.
Even with other fuels an increase in speed would be the goal.

I don't think you get this, tbh.
Or you get it and don't want to admit it.

Yes, in fact I am :)

And everyone has the same needs: food, water, shelter

All of these things are easily obtainable pretty much anywhere and if you can't get these things where you live it's time to move.

Anything else is a want, not a need.

As a qualified physicist but not someone who knows much about geology, I often speculate that it might serve a purpose in allowing the tectonic plates to shift around naturally, as they do.

I think that we might be playing a very dangerous game by pumping it out of the ground at the rate we are doing, and doing so could bring upon ourselves untold environmental catastrophes. I am not talking about climate change, sink holes for starters, major earthquakes anyone?

As a species we are either being very brave or very very stupid.
