fire fighting robots. thats an excellent idea..

may have to wait til there are Quantum computers. Now microchips are so many molecules across. the newer quantum chips will only have 4atoms.. very very thin chips.. want some dip?.... http://www.michigandaily.com/content/quantum-chip-could-revolutionize-information-processing

i think this present slow load is more to do with the conditions outside... something to do with the airwaves or the like... both my wi-fi connection and m'mobile broadband are slow tonight...

one thing i do know is that there will be both good and bad things that come from our "scientific progress"... it's not the technologies i am concerned about, but how they are applied...

Approaches like the one mentioned in that article that are different than what has been used to date with semiconductor chips will need to be used for chips to operate faster.

You've probably noticed how microprocessors got faster over the decades and then topped out around 3 GHz clock speeds. Above those speeds, the electronic circuitry begins to lose its discrete component character as the size of the individual components starts approaching the wavelength of the EM. It's a speed limit of sorts for the conventional chip technology.

Microprocessors that operate on optical principles as opposed to electrical ones are another option.

I dunno, I'm inclined to agree with hotwater and Death; he explains difficult concepts in simple terms, and does strike me as exceptionally intelligent and knowledgeable, and he always seems passionate about his physics. I suppose I'm biased, as I find string theory quite appealing.

I guess your main beef is that he focuses on how these future techs can be used for destruction, but as was pointed out, any tech will need to be guided by human hands for any purpose. Maybe he is just trying to sound a warning, or help people realize the destructive potential of emerging technologies.

tbh, i didn't hear the death and destruction too much... i was alarmed at a couple of things he said... almost subliminally... the first concerning WWlll, and the other "intelligence will be wiped away" something along those lines... come to think of it... that's what you saying orison... yeah... i'm getting that... all be it slowly :)

he is a bit arrogant... although, this does help to illustrate a case in point... he claims to be the co-founder of string theory... yet to Dogon Tribe had a symbol representing the exact same concept for string theory hundreds of years ago... if not, thousands (i'd have to check to be sure)... just goes to show that we have still not learned from our "westocentric" perspective...

yes, his perspective was very telling... very consumerist orientated... i would say that i don't like him much as an individual, but as a scientist, very interesting... a captivating orator... very good at padding out what he has to say.... and undoubtedly possessed of an intelligence of a sort...

enjoyed the tour he took us on... a glimpse of what could be going on if the trends continue... some good, some not so... as ever :)

Kaku is known to do that. Some of the commercialized venues in which he appears (pop TV shows, conspiracy radio shows, etc) like to focus on particular topics such as destruction to boost ratings. If a person only sees someone in a particular venue, they can get a warped or unrepresentative view of the person. Moreover, it's worse if that unrepresentative view gets generalized to an entire group.
