Yes i know what you mean but... just because everyone is doing it doesn't mean you shouldn't. If it really does bother you then find another peace symbol to wear... or something of that sort that isn't really mainstream or anything. But if it means something to you, then you should wear it no matter what people say/think.
who cares if everyone's wearing it or not? everyone understands the general meaning and knows what it means, as long as its out there that's what counts.
Haha i felt this way about rasta braclets and cloths i have been wearing them since like the 7th grade way before anyone in my grade was and not people wear them because they think it makes them a pothead or what ever without knowing what the colors mean. A while ago i was in class and i had on this braclet on with a peace sighn on it an she looked at me and pointed to my braclet and showed me all the peace sighns she was wearing. It was really wierd.
It's weird I used to wear the colors before I learned what they meant. I still do wear them now that I know what they mean. For those here that don't Red is for Blood Yellow is for Gold Green is for land Black is for people These are what was taken from Africa. I get a little crap when I wear them sometimes. I usually give the 3 second anthropology lecture, "We're all from Africa". The oldest human remains were found in Africa so to me it is the motherland for everyone. I also saw an interview with an old Hispanic activist and he talked about "Brown People" and explained it by saying "We all come from the Earth and when we die we all go back to the Earth so we are all brown." La Raza Humana. That is why I changed my sign out to "Stay Brown". Remember the Earth you came from and are going back to. Stay Brown, Rev J
lmao!! :smilielol5: Wait, wait wait...you mean to tell me the biggest money hungry corporation in America is marketing peace signs? :banghead:
Rev, I tried to rep you for your previous post, but it won't let me "Remember the earth you came from and are going back to"--I like this!
i know, that this will sound a bit counter-productive to the discussion as it has gone so far, but: does "bein upper class, having expensive sun glasses and makeup, designer name jeans and expensive done hair" for you mean, that this person is not allowed to be for peace?!? shouldn't we all be happy, that the peace-sign (and by this in 90 % of the cases the wish for it) is becoming so highly valued through all social classes? after all, that sign isn't sth exclusively hippy-ish (like for example a tye-dye-shirt might be) - and everyone can be in favour of peace?!? i for my part will smile at everybody, who's wearing one - cause i think, in most cases it's not for fashipn purpose only... just a thought, guys... love and peace, fred
I hear ya, I see so many wearing peace signs, or writing it out at the end of things, etc. But they don't know what it means...they don't really care either. It's become almost obsolete because of this.
Are they in? I hadn't noticed. I thought it was always that way. Either way, who the fuck says it's a bad thing? If they want to be peaceful, pull your head out of your ass and let them
Oh man. Thise people annoy the hell out of me. They bitch bitch bitch about politics and how everything is going to hell, yet so many that I know don't even vote. I have a few words for their kind, but those are not allowed here. No vote = no right to complain. IMO.
I'm calling you on this one. Here's the thing I realized I was getting snowed with one simple conversation in high school: Teacher: In a presidential election you vote for an elector who then votes for who they want for President. Me (realizing that the electors names aren't on the ballot): So my vote doesn't count. Teacher: No, you vote for an elector who then votes for who they want for President. Me: So my vote doesn't count. It kind of went in a circle from there. Then I read a great quote from Thomas Jefferson that said "The greatest enemy to a true democracy is an uninformed voter." When Arnold Schwartzenagger got elected Governor of California there were 130 people running against him. There is no way that any human can make an informed decision from that many candidates so the Musclebound actor with no political experience got the job on name recognition. Then look at how many bond issues are on a ballot and how confusing they are worded. There is no way in fuck that you can know what they all are. On top of that they are usually arranged in some weird no means yes fasion. Then you have voices of descent on bond issues circulating petitions that counter act other bond issues to get an opposing bond issue on the ballet and both issues pass. So which one is law. So I don't vote. But I do work and pay taxes. If I don't like how the government spends the money I give them I have every right to bitch. Just like if I give my fiancee money and I don't like how she spent it I have a right to bitch. To me saying "If you don't vote you don't have a right to bitch" is another example of brainless reciting of a catch phrase. It's a soundbite used to over simplify an issue and placate the masses into believing that their voices are being heard. As I see it one of the problems in this country is that who ever screams the loudest is considered the majority and the leaders try and placate them. Lets look at the past 30 years. In the 1980's you had Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority. Those pricks screamed the loudest and got Reagan in on it and Reagan bent over backwards to appease them because they were "The Majority". Then came Universal Healthcare. A small group of people started showing up at town hall meetings and shouted down the speakers and literally drowned out the voices of the majority who voted based on Universal Healthcare. They called in death threats to their senators to vote against Universal healthcare. Then came the Tea Party. These motherfuckers are all over the media and screaming loud for a "return to American values" I guess that means killing more brown people and exploiting the poor. But these people are hardly the majority yet the scream the loudest and are getting their way. Stay Brown, Rev J
No man, you got it all wrong. The electorate does exist, but last I knew, and yes I could be wrong about this, that is only for federal positions. In regards to state and local, your vote does count. Here locally I have had this very discussion with the Tea Party "freedom fighters", and they have this crazy idea that local issues are decided by some group of electorate in the Denver area because there are few if any special elections for local issues. They simply fail to see that it all happens at the same time and place where you vote for the state & federal representatives. So yes JC your vote does count. But it's up to you to decide who it counts for. First off America is not a democracy but a republic. I agree. That's why I do the research before I vote. I ask those that deal specifically with those issues. As you said and I reworded to suit my thoughts on this- What happens between you and yours is no business of mine. But if you pay taxes, I feel you should vote. But that's my opinion, and if you wish to disagree, go for it. But as I said, maybe when dealing with the POTUS your vote may not count. But, again as I said, locally it does. Screw the Tea Party. I abhor misuse of tax dollars. I think that when any of our leaders intentionally abuses our tax dollars they should be taken out and (description of Constitutionally appropriate yet legally illegal act withheld). But I also support paying taxes. I know some people don't like it. But consider that without those taxes, where would America be? Too often I hear the rhetoric that if America had no taxes, that somehow, miraculously, the world becomes a better place, without explaining it. Well, nothing they can validate at least. The ideology "think globally, act locally" does not apply solely to environmental issues. No one, at least none of the "Tea Party" bunch that I know, can ever explain to me how the world can legitimately become a better place without American taxes. I say JC, exactly the opposite. Keep in mind all the countries we're giving money to. IF it affects out tax base, it affects them. Be it voting or paying taxes- "Think Globally, Act Locally".
