In the waters off Yemen the Russian Navy has sent 10 Somali Pirates adrift in an inflatable dinghy 350 miles from shore. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/17/AR2010051702971_Comments.html Many navies from around the world have discovered the problems of what to do with these pirates. Does the navy take the pirate home with them? Well, that's a problem cause they maybe weren't planning on going home. And some Somalis sued Germany after being taken to court there. Plus if you are not in the jurisdiction of the home country (USA, Germany, RSK, Greece, whatever) why should that crime have to be tried back at home. Some have been sent to Kenya, I guess cause that is the closest country with the will and ability to prosecute. Damn sure can't send them to Somalia. Djibouti, Ethiopia or Eritrea is going to handle it? Doubt it. Can't trust Yemen. Problem is that Kenya is getting overwhelmed and Nairobi has said "No more." So the Russians solved the problem themselves. Supposedly the Danes and the Dutch have done this before as well, but they weren't as candid. There have also been videos out there of Russians blowing up a Somali Pirate ship with the Somalis handcuffed onboard. http://www.eaglespeak.us/2010/05/russian-navy-captures-and-destroys.html#comment-form I can't find any news reports of the blowing up version. I don't think it really happened. They had lots of good video of surrendered black dudes that could have been Somalis, and one dude on the ground with a massive wound, and good video of a nice explosion in the background. I want to believe this video because this would easily be the coolest thing the Russians have done since the liberation of Poland in WWII, but I just don't know if it's real. So what are y'all's thoughts? I think I like the idea of letting them go out in the middle of the Ocean. "Well, fellas, we don't have any way to prosecute you, so you may go. Have a safe voyage home, and please don't do this again." But you are 200 miles out to sea. You put 12 guys in a little boat rated for 6. You are in 6 foot seas and they have a 20 horsepower motor. You give them a gallon of water and a loaf of bread and say "Au revoir!" Obama may not like it, but I'll bet our Navy boys can find a way to make it work through some loophole. And many of the rest of the world's navies don't have to worry about political correctness. Yes, I did just use a word with two apostrophes. And yes that is correct usage as well. I redefine the language and use it the way I see fit, thank you. I do the same when I speak Spanish. I really like the idea of blowing them up, but that won't fly with International Naval Rules. Unless. . . , didn't they declare war on us. Can't we declare war on them then we can play by the rules of war. Or would that be bad because Obama would want to bring them over here to America and treat them like some murderer from Richmond or a car thief from Philly? Just like he does with the soldiers captured in Afghanistan.
