I've got a 96 Dodge B2500 3/4 ton low boy. High top vans are nice if you can get one. Don't sweat the gas mileage. You have to look at this thing as your HOUSE. You wont make it if your not somewhat comfortable. Get a good sized van if you can. Remember once you get going you will be carrying at least a 1000 pounds of stuff so 3/4 ton is nice. Good luck
I was thinking of a VW set up with a pop top, but with the weight I will be hauling, the VW was not a good option with me. I wanted at least a 3/4 ton van, but I only have a half, so I added helper springs on the rear. What a difference that made. Also raised it 3 3/4" at the current setting. The Astro / Mini van was a thought, but did not last long. Anyway, here is a lady that lives in her pop top VW, and is seriously thinking about selling it. If you are interested, you may want to drop her a line to see if she still wants to sell. She keeps a blog at: http://www.faliaphotography.com/ There is many helpful topics and articles there that are of great interest to the van dweller. To see a site with a guy living in a high top class B with some helpful tips and article, you can check out: Simple Stress Free Lifestyle By all means, check out 2 Dogs thread here on the hip forums. He has been doing it in AZ for over 23 years! Cool read. For me and brother Ken who posted above, we are doing the full size van so you can stand up in and have more room for "Stuff". Hum, since Bro Ken is 6'5", I am not sure they make them big enough for him! Van On
