I hope this is the appropriate section for such thread but Im curious as to the effect SSRI's have on drug experiences. Particularily Prozac. Is it dangerous to take drugs? Are some worse than others? I should also point out in the situation I am talking about a low dose of medication is taken daily. Any information is appreciated.
Well in my personal experience SSRI's or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors mix rather well with an array of different OTC meds and recreational meds. I was on Zoloft 200mg, a really large dose, daily for over a year. In this time I can tell you that with any SSRI it all depends largely on the persons tolerance. I was able to drink on Zoloft, but you have to find that 'comfort spot' and know at all times where the line is, and not to cross it. Weed is actually potentiated by SSRIs. It can cause acute muscle spasms and tingling in the limbs. SOME people enjoy this, myself included, but Im sure some dont. Opiate mix with SSRIs as well. I was also prescribed Oxycodone for injuries at one point and the two combined effortlessly. But I think SSRIs block some of the euphoria from opiates. Ive also done Shrooms on SSRIs and if defiantly had some sort of blocker of psilocybin. MDMA will mix too. All in all, SSRIs are pretty mixable. But I STRONGLY suggest that before you full blown dose on anything you start slow. One drink, see where it goes. One, or even half a pill, and see where it goes. Each person is different so it is hard to give a firm answer.
Yeah, SSRI's will make taking any drug slightly different. There really are no adverse effects that I know of except MDMA. If you do decide to take MDMA, start at a low dose because of the possibility to get serotonin syndrome. MDMA is an agonist of serotonin, SSRI's block the re-uptake. So, even though it will most likely dull the effects of MDMA, it will increase the chance for serotonin syndrome exponentially. Other than that, you can expect less of an effect from most psychedelics like mushrooms and acid. And dulling of certain part of some drugs. Have fun and stay safe mang. Like the guy above said, start low just like everyone should with or without SSRI's for every drug.
Actually it's not the best idea to mix SSRIs with anything especially MAOIs. i'm surprised to even see responses condoning it. SSRIs increase the risk of serotonin syndrome astronomically with most (all?) serotergenic psychedelics especially MDMA (has MAOI properties). They will also drastically reduce the effects of many drugs. i don't know about opiates and benzos etc... and i'm on a slow moving kindle with limited internet so i don't care to look it up right now but i will later. Alcohol and SSRIs were not a good mix for me, i found it really blurred the line between buzzed and total blackout and i tended to be a more angry/emotional drunk. That being said, the mix probably won't kill you on the first go round, maybe not ever, but after having an episode of serotonin syndrome i am hesitant to ingest anything that increases my risk for it these days. There really is a reason they put those "do not take with alcohol" labels on the bottles.
MDMA isn't considered a psychedelic from my understanding. And its actually recommended to take low doses of SSRI's after MDMA or before to reduce the neurotoxicity. There is no reason to mix any SSRI with a drug anyways, so I wouldn't do it. But its not a very dangerous thing as long as you titrate properly, like you should on or off other drugs. "These data demonstrate that fluoxetine produces long-lasting protection against MDMA-induced neurodegeneration, an effect apparently related to the presence of the drug and its active metabolite inhibiting the 5-HT transporter." http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1038/sj.bjp.0704230/full
That's what I figuired... damm, I'm gunna miss e, but I'm not fucking around with serotonin syndrome.... How bout Stims? Good idea, bad idea? Will I stilll be able to trip off psychadelics? Maybe just dose higher?
Last I heard the jury was out, but the consensus was that SSRI's definately affect the trip. For some it potentiates, for some it flattens the effects out. As SB mentioned, NEVER ever mix SSRI's with MAOI's. Do NOT taunt the happy fun ball.
You are very likely to get serotonin syndrome off of meth/amphetamine, cocaine, or other stimulants that work with serotonin as well. You will still be able to trip but it will make it more dulled and you will need a higher dose. I think I said that... idk, anyways, taking drugs is dangerous. If you want to be really safe, don't take drugs. p.s. SSRI's can fuck with your sex drive long term, trust me. It better to be depressed for a time than do that in my opinion.
BTW, is anyone reading what I say? Prozac helps with neurotoxicity... Read the article if you don't trust me. Just don't be stupid... MAO-A (MDMA is -A, not MAO-B) preferentially deaminates serotonin, so it has a destructive effect on serotonin giving it less of a chance to create the syndrome. You guys haven't heard of taking a SSRI to combat brain damage? Or vitamin C to reduce free radicals?
I'm starting to second guess taking Prozac then.... I love my recreational drugs.... If you took medication daily then stopped for awhile, would the effect of various drugs have the same effect they had before ever taking medication? Or does that stuff stay with you...
I would stop taking it personally. Read some of these Note the fifth one down. Fluoxetine has a half life of 4-6 days with daily users, and its active metabolite has a half life of 4-16 days. So it might take a couple of weeks to get the full effect off of psychedelics. I have heard that stopping for a week is where the biggest difference is seen.
You might want to read an article on another forum called "Antidepressants and Recreational Drugs" just google search the title.
Regardless of MDMA's psychedelic status, it's a serotonergic drug (like many psyches) that also has MAOI properties. That's my main concern regarding mixing SSRIs. But yeah, it would make sense to take a low dose SSRI as like a post load because it would help reset your serotonin levels/production. I wouldn't continue taking it regularly though. As far as the OP is concerned.. yeah, I would just either take the Prozac and stick with just weed for now on or ditch the SSRIs if you feel you can live without them and want to continue recreational drug use. Like Cod said, it's not immediately life threatening if you're smart about it, but it CAN be. One less risk to avoid and better safe than sorry when it comes to serotonin syndrome (or worse) I say.
On a personal note, after going through and reading the fellow posters responses, I would ward against taking MDMA with an SSRI. While it mixed okay for me, that was a lucky chance. If I would have known now what I did over a year ago when I mixed the two, I wouldnt have. Honestly SSRIs are not all that they crack up to be. I would read further into Prozac before you begin taking it. Granted Im no doctor, or your physician, but SSRIs have A LOT of side effects. Like I said, Ive done just about EVERY drug on SSRIs. While I dont suggest it, I was simply giving you my own experiences. In the end I quit the SSRI. It didnt do what it was supposed too, there is no cure all pill for depression. So instead of worrying about ODing cause of a mixing I just cancelled out, with my doctors advice, a drug that sucked up my money and time researching the mixology of SSRIs
I have experienced Serotonin Toxicity (formerly called Serotonin Syndrome). It is horrible and lasts over a day. It was due to mixing Effexor (an SNRI) with Imitrex (a serotonin agonist headache pill). However, I also maintain an astonishingly high dose Tramadol addiction without any problem with serotonin toxicity.
