Thank you Sandra for the response. I'm more of a thrift store person then a designer jeans person. I was talking about buying food and essentials for myself from the side work. It doesn't take much to keep me happy.

Are you planning on working on the property and buildings during the winter?

i work all year round on the farm!! always something to do..
the weather here is pretty mild - for me that is - as i do outdoor environmental facilitating and work with horses for years. in new york it gets cold!! down here the water barely ices over in the buckets.. so this is nice.
not to much snow either!!! so i work all year round. the ground maybe freezes 1/2 inch for about 2 weeks.. the dampness is what gets me.. but a good hot fire takes care of that.
we are starting into the hunting season too so that will take care of our meat . i don't tthink i have had more than a few pounds of beef in the past few years mostly venison and the beef and pork have been local freash. i have chickens also and would like other stuff too as we grow.. i had squirrel,
not bad but have to see how to cook it.. we can grow tobacco too if you need to smoke.
i do fleamarket selling smalls and pays for the animal feed and utilities..
a few people here are making things to sell also..
    be in touch
    peace sam

Well I know I will unless someone tries to stop me. ;)

I'm guessing if we can collect a basic mechanics set of tools we can get allot of gigs from the surrounding farms fixing tractors and so forth real cheap, lots of conveyors on some farms, basically lots of stuff breaks and theres always fences needing mending. Just need to pop a flier with some pull tab phone numbers up at the local Save-a-lot or Mini mart / gas station. And lets not forget paint and plaster work. I've also never seen an old farmhouse that couldn't use some electrical work which I've already got the gear for. :cheers2:

Better still,we can offer direct barter for labor if needed, trade some blood and sweat for a cut of the crop or some dressed hens, etc.??

We find a diesel generator that can power that welder and a cheap flatbed pickup and we have easy income with tube steel cattle pens or portable chicken yards etc.

It may be depressed but I think we can cheer it up in those parts some for ourselves as well as our neighbors.

i didnt mean to offend by the age remark. sincerely i apologize if i did offend anyone, but i think there should be more different ages.

and if people start comming over now, we cant actually stay in the commune?
and when can we start to actually stay there? id rather just get there when there is room for me to stay for however long i stay for.

I can be a tad touchy about people putting any type of useless criteria on a possible home...

If there were only people in their 40's and 50's and everyone under 40 said, oh well I want a place with people under 40... there will never be any under 40...

If there was only one person there... and everyone said, oh I want a place with a lot of people... guess what... there will always be only one person...

If there are no single people there, and everyone single said, I want somewhere with single people, once again, there never would be...

No matter what you read online, or hear from talking to people online (or over the phone) none of it will matter... The only way you can know if it is a great match for who you are, is to go... perhaps you being there will be the influence the place needs to shift in a direction that would make you feel perfectly at home... perhaps not... and that's the point...

Sam has opened her home to you (and others) and invited you to come visit them and see...

While you sit at home surfing the net, trying to find that 'perfect' place... she (and the others with her, like many other places) are actually working and getting things done that are directly related to them surviving the winter...

Although Sam seems like a nice person who would happily sit here and answer all the questions you could throw at her, do you think that's a good use of her time, just when everything must be ready for winter?

If you want to go, ask her if you can and then go... anything else is just delaying tactics and wasting time... which for those actually working on the land, is not something they can afford.

    Edited to add...

Just so everyones clear on this.. I have nothing to do with Sam and her place... Don't take my bitchiness to be a reflection on her or her place.

    :)

Hello, Im a 20 year old female currently located in the farmlands of NW Ohio. This is where I grew up. I also spent a year in the city of Dayton for college but the fast pace wasn't for me. With each passing day, I grow more and more unhappy with my life situation. I wish to be slightly off the grid, no need for cell phones or TV. I wish to live organically. I also wish to live in a peaceful and friendly environment. I've been thinking about moving to a community for almost a year now. I just quit my job working min wage and feel like this is my opportunity to move on to something new.

I feel like I have a lot to offer to a community. I love to cook for people and am pretty good at it. I paint, draw, sew, and make hemp jewelry. I can play piano, clarinet, would like to learn guitar, and can sing. I also have basic web and graphic design skills and can write well. I love animals and have worked at an animal shelter. I also have some gardening skills. I am passionate and willing to work.

    Please contact me at iriejewelrydesign@gmail.com

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hey I want to express my interest in joining the commune. I understand you have a lot of people in the young male category and you'd like to keep things balanced. There are many things I feel I can contribute to the community however. I am a passionate musician, and would love to bring my ukulele and voice out to you guys. My experience as a carpenter enables me to lend a hand in any building projects. I am an avid outdoorsman and have numerous essential survival skills under my belt. I'm sure my positive attitude and open mind would be at home in this project, and I hope to receive a PM from you soon. :)

Hey there.. I am interesting in moving to a commune within the next month or so and was wondering if you guys still had some room for me and possibly my boyfriend. We are in our early 20's. I am very creative and can cook well. He does sheet metal roofing and is very strong. We are both very hard workers and we have a car. Please email me at iriejewelrydesign@gmail.com... we are very interested!!

Wow, just woke up 10 minutes ago, 2 hours to go till I need to get to Union Station and still waiting on the last laundry load to finish drying, hafta hop a shower still and still squeeze in a minute to grab a snack before the 20+ hour ride. Heart racing just a little here, but I think just from the last time I went to leave and missed the train by like 5-10 minutes so I'm a bit on edge.

I really have about 7,1/2 hours to go but I don't want to take any chances so I'm treating it as if the final check in is at 12:30 and not 5:15. ;)

Still figuring out a ride to the station at this point but worst case I'm right by the El' train which gets me 2 blocks from the station in like 30 minutes. Allllll good. :D

Pretty freaking psyched up for this move, Empaths should never live in big cities, especially this one (Chicago). :willy_nilly:

This is the thing. It's what it all needs to be about. I want to make this happen. I have a small son and would be completely willing to come and not really teach, just let children learn for the most part. I have been looking for some time into free schools, home schools, and democratic schools for my son. None of them seem to be what they need to be. How could a child grow up in a place like this and not learn about science? How could he help build and not have applicable studies in math? I have a background, not a completed degree, in developmental psychology. My major is art. I started college to be a teacher, but the way our schools work just doesn't work. I was pursuing a degree in art therapy when I got sidetracked by marriage and our first child. I don't want to go back, I want to live and enjoy my life. This is exactly what my family is looking for.

    Bravo.

Do you have any children yet on the farm? I've just found you today and it would probably not be until spring when it would be feasible for my husband and son and I to make a move like this, but you are what we are looking for. I posted a reply further up there about doing some teaching. My husband and I don't really have much to offer accept a pair of strong backs. I guess we'll be holding out the winter here in Detroit and conserving our resources.
I would love to continue following this and wonder when, if you aren't already, would you be comfortable having a very young one around.
