yes but this one takes the cake, these actors looked like they were goofing off and not concentrating with trying to pull of bostonian accentsoliceman:
I guess you are from Boston? Ben Affleck directed this and he grew up there, so I would think he has a pretty good handle on how people from Boston sound, but if an actor or actress can't do it, they just can't do it and you aren't going to recast the role. RottenTomatoes has it at 95%, so it's not a flop. It might not be that good, but a flop means terrible to me, and I don't think that will be the case. I want to see it but I'll wait until I can Netflix it.
who is rotten tamatas,i have never heard of rotten tamatas,i am a movie historian and i have watched a lot of films, this one due in part by the schlocky accents and unbelievable story lines i find to be rather floppy
It provides a composite score based on multiple reviews from various critics. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_town/
Haha well no shit man. But what about movies you haven't seen yet? You never check reviews to see if you should spend money on it and see it in theaters?
as a critic i like to actually view the film rather than listen to these so called paid critics, there are so many movies that get bad reviews and those movies actually turned out to be very enjoyable
I've heard good things about this film and have been cursing myself for not going to see it while it was in the theaters. It has an 8.0/10 on IMDB out of over 15,000 votes currently and someone already mentioned it to have a unusually high score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also did very well at the box office. There is quite a bit of 'Oscar Buzz' about this one as well...
The quotes below were taken from IMDB Forum 'The Town' and are comments direct from people who are from Boston. There was a discussion on if the accents were realistic or not but people from the area seemed to collectively have the same opinion... What we have to remember though... This is a MOVIE, not a DOCUMENTARY. Seems like people will pinpoint the most ridiculous inconsequential part of a film and use it to pick it apart instead of giving the film a proper review... In otherwords, haters will be haters. "Accents were extremely authentic, I've lived in Boston my whole life, and that's how people talk I can assure you. Not insulted. Funny though Jeremy Renner's accent was maybe even better than Ben's." "This was the 1st movie I've seen that actually gets the Boston accent right. I've lived on Massachusetts' North Shore all my life- and of course I know Affleck can do it, but I thought Jeremy Renner, Titus Welliver, and Blake Lively did a terrific job. The hardest part about the Boston accent is it's inconsistencies...(r's are dropped, yes, but not ALL the time.) and they all nailed it. UNLIKE some films....Mystic River, I'm looking in your direction..." About Ben Affleck's Accent in the movie... "He was raised in Cambridge, where people have Boston accents. He sounded convincing to me. What outsiders have to understand is that people in different parts of Boston and from different ethnic groups have different accents." "My husband was born and raised in the Boston area. He said the whole movie was spot on, including Ben's accent. To me he sounds just like every family and friend I have ever met from that area."
That's true the movie was filmed in massachusetts and the cast included local actors who didn't have to exaggerate their boston accent :2thumbsup: Hotwater
Well, I never saw The Town - not my type of movie but couldn't help noticing this thread about it. Especially Mr. Agent's comments. Don't we all! But your attitude of ignoring other ppl's opinion seems kind of insular. I write movie blurbs (changed from "review" because they often center on personal observations other than a review). I see a movie almost weekly and like to write my take on them. But I also compare to actual reviewers take on it as well, either agreeing or disagreeing. And these threads really indicate that it comes down to personal taste as to whether a movie is good or bad. You need to get out more "movie historian." The two main sources of movie info is International Movie Data Base and Rottentomatoes. I go there a lot to pick up production pics to put in my blurbs and usually glance at the aggregate of reviews which are quantified in Fresh or Rotten. A new feature that I like is they now show the Audience opinion of a movie, contrasted with the Reviewers opinion. They often differ, with the Reviewers panning a movie that is well-liked by the audience. (I attribute this to overthinking as opposed to just enjoying an entertainment) Well, it looks like the Boston accents are done by Bostonians. IDK what caused the native speakers to lose their accents in this movie that everyone else thinks was legit, but looks like you may need to go back and reassess your assessment.
