I have to say, most mornings on my way to work, through the outskirts of the city center, there is an awful stench of fried chicken, stale beer and piss.
    The litter is terrible too.
Thankfully it's cleared up before 7am.
I'll try and takes some pictures.

Alcohol has my friends dad dying at only 54 with less than 3 years (completely destroyed liver). That says enough for me. Really shitty seeing how their families been doing lately (everyone else)

My dad died of diabetes caused by alcoholism.

I still think crack is way more harmful.
Crack's neighborhood-destroying quality comes partially from prohibition though..

I've definitely seen more people's lives wrecked by alcohol, but I've seen people's lives wrecked much more thoroughly by crack and heroin addictions.

When the state pays for healthcare it should have a say in cutting costs, no?

There's been so much propaganda against marijuana. I'm surprised Prop 19 didn't pass...Although I figured that most people with kids might be frightened of allowing it to be legal and just weren't ready for it.
Alcohol, OTOH, is far more lethal then most drugs, but it's so imbedded into our societies fabric as acceptable. Nicotine is a tough one to kick as well, but I quite smoking so many years ago and never have the urge anymore for a cig.

I've been hit head on twice by drunk drivers, I hurt every day because of it.

When someone drinks and drives, it is my business.

^^Jack, I live three doors down from one of two local taverns in a town with a population of less than 500...I see drunk drivers out my window at closing time every night.
I'm betting law enforcemant knows they could park in front of either bar at closing time and put folks in jail virtually 'til the taverns went out of business...it really is quite disgusting.

Yea. I managed a restaurant and lounge in 1983 and became friends with the new owner a few years later. I designed and maintained the web site in exchange for my tab whenever I went there. It closed a couple of years ago and was sold.

I got to know the legal aspects and how the cops relate to such matters in a small town. Occasionally, they would pull people over leaving late at night, but complaints from the owner and some of the more influential patrons (big time tax payers) would put an end to it. The cops have to be careful, as it's illegal to "target" any specific group of people.

To be fair to my friend, though, he bought a tram and had it travel all over town to pick up and deliver his patrons one summer, but not enough people would use it to be cost effective.

In a town of about 500 with only 3 bars, that would be something the city could invest in, or get the bar owners together and have them pay for it. Charge a small fee to the bar and have the bartender give free tickets to the drunks for the trip home. I don't remember where Bob got his, but it looked like the ones they use at 6 Flags in the parking lot.

Booze is far too ingrained in society, especially here in this state. We have legislators holding back open container and other drunk driving legislation because they are such boozers they are afraid of getting caught on the road themselves!
