Years ago people were recording songs onto tape from the radio, or copying albums from friends. They weren't paid for then.

But you can't honestly say that it was done to the extent it's done today with the internet.

When I release my first album I'm not even gonna expect $10 in CD sales. The CD's are useless now, they'll just be given away with shirts and other band merch as an "extra".

Yeah, it's fucking hard to believe the actual music is second to the band merchandise now.....

Are you, a metalhead, completely forgetting live shows?

No that's what I'm relying on.

Live shows are the only way to make money now. Unless you headlining or co-headlining your paying for free which is the stage I'm at right now.

The only way I'm gonna be able to make money is by selling shirts and stickers and shit. And I can't even do that until I release an E.P(which is happening in the spring hopefully).

I've had this planned for my whole life, and it's all coming together... By this time next year I'll be playing in Toronto. I can taste it!!! :drool5:

that's your friends fault... for one.. cd's are going to be gone soon.. vinyl is making a come back.. and now vinyl is starting to come with digital downloads of the record bought... 2.. any band will tell you money is not in the merch.. its found in the shows being played.. if they are struggling... then people are not showing up to their shows.. they need to market themselves better or they will go no where... or maybe they have.. and your buddies band just sucks

also thanks to downloading i have come in contact with artists i would have never heard of otherwise.. "hmm who are these people" *download* "i like this shit" and then i go see them live and if i have the cash i will usually buy a CD or T-shirt.. piracy helps smaller bands by spreading the word free of charge.. kind of like t-shirts.. the band doesn't expect to make money off of them.. but it turns a fan into a free billboard

and my post was far from relevant.. using limewire or frostwire is like still using IE or Netscape as your web browser.. there are better.. safer.. and more efficient ways of downloading music than p2p network sharing

Your friend isn't very smart for relying on his band to support his life. You should only do that if you CAN ACTUALLY MAKE ENOUGH MONEY BY DOING THAT. I mean who's dumb enough to just play music without any other source of income when your not even regularly touring yet.

I don't even make money yet when I play, I just open for bands and I've already seen what the music world does. I'm lucky that I'm seeing this at a young age because by the time I'm 20 I'll have enough money to just tour for a while and not work.

Fuck I hate people who are unprepared.

so can you search for and download torrents of single songs? or do you (usually) have to download the whole album?

I stopped using Limewire a couple of years ago because I would download songs and just get weird noises as though they were somehow blocked from being distributed too many times. I dont know if you had that problem as well......but yeah, I download music from Ares and have never had a problem with it. I have an additional detachable hard drive (they cost anywhere from $50) and have the Ares software and all the songs stored on there. That way, when I am not downloading music the Ares software/program cant monitor my internet activity (i.e. spyware). I've been using Ares for about 4 years without problems of anykind. When I had Limewire I got some viruses too.

So damn true. I actually kind of miss cassettes. It was so much easier to just tape from the radio and have an instant compilation of songs. Yeah you can do pretty much the same thing with a cd but its not the same. LOL

you took one line and used it.. wow... way to only pick out one line that you could badly defend...

you make it sound like the only way your friend is not getting anywhere is by not selling his $10/15 cd's.. really?... hmm 1 show = $200-500... 20 cd's = $200... which one is the bigger profit? do i really need to go into anymore detail...

tell your buddy to stop living the pipe dream and get a job

I have demonoid invites if you want them. It's an invite only online torrent community and the files are monitored and whatnot. There will be plenty of songs on there... high quality, too. Ask and you shall receive.

(Hope this doesn't go against forum rules in anyway. I saw BBad talk about torrents so I'm thinking it's ok...)
