The whole sub-prime and mortgage securitization mess is likely a scheme cooked up with the help of the US government for the purpose of creating an artificial economic boom for the purpose of helping portfolios. The homeowners who signed these seem to be regarded as throw away elements... tools used to effect transactions that in truth were fated to be in default once the sub-prime period expired. The foreclosure paperwork SNAFU in the media now is a distraction. Four administrations helped feed home buyers to a system that seemed poised to spit them out once they got all the money they could from them.
It would be safe to say, most home owners who signed had no idea how bad of a deal they just signed on for.
