Our hero Julian Assange has stood up to the media many times in his campaign for global transparency. Now he has appeared on the Larry King interview show on CNN to explain his ideology.

Apparently Larry King, the old gossiping gasbag that he is, kept bringing up Assange's personal life rather than discussing the issues at hand.

Larry always gets personal with his guests, it's his trademark. Assange should've known that. That's one of the things that made Larry King's show a success.

It seems to me Assange should stick with press releases cause they're gonna hound him otherwise.

No offense, but could you not word your threads as if we all think the same.
This guy isn't my hero, and I know a few others who feel the same way too.
    Thank You.

I put him right up there with American folk heroes like "Bonnie and Clyde," "Jessee James" and "John Doe." The last because we don't know who the hell this guy really is and he's doing everything he can to keep it that way.

I wouldn't go that far, personally.
It isn't even that I don't really know who he is.
I just think "hero" is a bit much and it isn't right to claim he is "our" hero with out being asked first, imho.
As for the interview, the guy is moaning about interviewers continually bringing up his personal life? Tough.
If he doesn't want the standard interview then just send a press release.
Has Julian made any sensational and, in fact, false claims?

I chose my comparisons for a reason. Bonnie and Clyde were folk heroes because they were robbing banks when Bankers were seen as evil. And Jessee, while his reputation was not entirely deserving, was seen as a modern day Robin Hood who took from the rich RR elite. All 3 were stickin it to The Man, much like Sir Julian; and whether you like it or not, it's not exactly legal to steal confidential government documents and post them on the internet.

While you can draw a loose comparison to these documents and the Pentagon Papers, Daniel Ellsberg took great pains to redact any sensitive information that would compromise American troops and their allies. Also, most of what was in the Pentagon Papers had not been previously reported by the mainstream press. I still haven't heard anything new coming from the WikiLeaks papers, it's all glitz and glitter.

Truthfully, aside from any harm these "unredacted" documents may cause for troops or individuals, I really don't care much. To me, it's just another psycho-social phenomenon to study where some unknown guy rises to cult hero status only because he has the balls to seemingly "stick it to the man" by posting documents that are nothing more than "old news."

I really do not care about his personal life. I am glad he has released these documents. I like the interview where he just calmy walked away, the one with the female interviewing him.

    WAY TO GO JULIAN ASSANGE!!!

    Fair enough.

I must not get out much, because I have not read these reports before.

It is old news for the lot that keep their head in the sand. JackFlash...you know there are allot of people that are in denial about what our occupation of middle eastern countries has really been about and what has gone on. There are allot of people that believe that American troops ( and our allies) are just helping to "spread freedom democracy". Or.. we were saving the world from WMD's.

If Julian Assange draws attention to the truth more power to him. I think it is also a safe bet that he realizes the more attention he gets the more people will hear about Wikileaks that may not have heard about it.

Nyxx, how much of the reports have you read?

    How many IEDs were cleared?
How many lives were saved due to soldiers doing a good job?
How would you compare the positive the negative and the nothing to really write home about?

The key problem I have with a dump of information it is meaningless with out fair analysis.
The only thing that seems to occur is vested interests sift through it to bolster their agenda.
These reports don't seem to tell a secret mission as to why "we" are there, so I'm not so sure it will tell us what it has really been about (if different to the stated aims).
The other thing that concerns me is that it has been turned into a very Americentric story.
    I dunno, though...
It's been less than a week since I started sifting through the reports and the various news agendas.

Not that much...I already knew America and her allies were not going to find WMD. I am one of the "crazies" that does not trust the goverment, nor do I feel they represent the common wo/man.
I like seeing these documents made available for anyone interested.
Maybe I would personally feel a bit better about this world if there was more goverment transparency.

I have been aware of Wikileaks for quite some time. They have exposed/published many documents that have nothing to do with America. It probably seems "americentric" with the documents recently published, because it is an American (and her allies) issue.

I like what Julian Assange is doing. He has more courage than the mother fuckers killing innocent civilivians because they believe in a different god; or because they just happen to be an unlucky sucker sitting on too many natural resources, born in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The reports are not about WMDs.
Yeah, it's a fair comment to say the current "leak" centres around the American military.
What I meant was, not enough scrutiny has been given to the Iraq forces.
They are one of the "allies" too, you know....they are fighting the terrorists/insurgents as well.
Why would you think the US military are killing people because they believe a different god?...or because they are sitting on resources?
Sorry you are not making a lot of sense.
Please, stick to the reports not your own opinion about what is going on...your just projecting your prejudices, imho.
That's what I meant: people are using this to bolster their own agenda.
I think you are being totally unfair.
Nothing you have said seems to relate to these leaks.
