I've been searching here on the forum and other places on the internet for some answers but haven't quite got what I was looking for. Clearly, one of the best ways to prevent any STD's is through safe and protected sex, thats a given.

My concerns are if you're having sex for the first time, or if its two people who have had sex but never had any STDs, can you still get something? (Looking at it logically, if you've never had it or neither person has had any sort of STD, how can you still catch something? Do STDs lie dormant?)

i'm pretty sure certain STDs can lie dormant, but i also think that those STDs would still show up on an STD test, so if your partner has been tested and came up clean you should be ok. of course there's still room for error...

So in other words, someone could have something even though they've never had sex?

well yeah, there's also shared drug needles and other such ways to spread such diseases.

but that's blatantly not what i said. all i said was that i'm pretty sure STDs can lie dormant. all that means is that the symptoms might not appear even if you carry it, not that STDs are airborne or anything like that.

Group B Strep is also something to consider, but all in all, you should be okay.
