Currently I'm recycling gently used yarn, but my best recycles are cotton sweaters. I was given 2 extra large mens cotton sweaters, one is stained, well theres yards and yards of good cotton in it to be re-made into dish cloths, towels and face cloths. The one I'm still taking apart has a finer blue thread in it that crochets up into nice tight dish cloths. But I've got patterns for making under pants from t-shirts, made pincushions out of two back pockets off a pair of jeans-stuffed with un-wearable pantyhose. The list goes on, I'd love to hear what everyone else is doing. Lois
I usually recycle clothes to make other clothes, in whole or in part. I take the part of the clothing I want, cut it out and use it to make something new. Sometimes I also do cushions, handbags, cleaning cloths or anything else I want.
Hello, I'm still at it, today I am unraveling a cotton sweater to make towels, which I will crochet. Planning to start knitting some winter socks tonight. If I get good and mad at something, I'll have the pair done by tomorrow night (thats 27 inches of sock in oh, 12 hours or so, if I don't get mad, I'll just knit. Still recycling gently used yarn and got more craft "toys" (Looms, crochet hooks and knitting needles) coming from eBay. I HAVE to recycle my favorite blouse, it was white and has yellowed-hydrogen peroxide is SUPPOSED to work to make it white again, but haven't tried it. If it doesn't work may use tea and make it look beige-y instead-pirate-ish sort of. So who else out there recycles Clothes besides we two who have posted? Come on drumminmama, I know you're a crafty lady, what's your take on this??? CHEERS Lois
oh of course-have lots of denim and flannel-need quilt frame and batting. Plan to do "window quilts" to stop some of the blasted drafts in this old miserable house of mine BRRRR:freezing: HUGS Lois
I took an oversized Beatles t-shirt and turned it into a tube dress, but I have to take the stitching out and take in the sides a little so it actually has some curves, lol.
when i dun need a shirt or something i eather gib it to my grandma cuz she sells stuff in mexico or i make lil plushies outta them :3
That's one way of dealing with leftover clothes. I will be cutting down 1 single sheet and a light bedspread into pillow cases, both got burn marks on them from some fool smoking in bed. I am in the midst of cleaning up my crafty stuff and organizing it for when I get my shortie bus to use as a craft room. Take Care Lois--I need a cup of tea (caffeine break)
Crafty? I'm crafting press releases these days! (for a solar nonprofit) but for clothing recycling, I need to make draft dodgers for the front door, actually something absorbent as rainwater drains to the door sill. yay (deadpan) I have a few items that need some curves, so that is restructuring more than reusing/remaking. Can you point us to a how to for reusing yarn? How does one ravel a sweater and keep the yarn?
I unravel old sweaters, save the yarn that is not almost worn through and keep it until I have enough of similar thickness to make a new sweater. I have a fab very basic pattern which lends itself to any thickness of yarn. T-shirts for dish clothes is an absolute must. I use them in the kitchen first and then they get relegated to floor washing and the dirtier jobs. I know it's not really recycling but I buy a lot of second-hand clothes if I like the style or fabric and make them fit me. If I'm really lucky ( not very often) something comes ready to be worn.
I am just about to start a bunch of sewing and will be saving long scraps for rag rugs and other scraps for crazy quilts. Just finished unravelling an extra large cotton sweater for making towels, next project-an extra large acrylic yarn sweater to make doll clothes from or do some loom knitting. After that-have to dye a pair of sheets that are still good but got splashed by bleach. I have some towels to cut down to face cloths and some bigger towels to cut down into smaller towels, and 1 very worn bed sheet (cotton) that will make nice hankies. Cheers Lois
I like taking old sweaters and pieces of fleece, flannel, cotton, wool....really whatever and make coats and sweater coats like these....
Very pretty, phunky. I've been getting queen size flannel sheets from the thrift store and making diapers and wipes lately. I also found a couple of really nice ones to make crib sheets. Socks with holes get cut open for cleaning rags.
